LaceKnitting query
What are the biggest or largest size needles you've used with lace-weight
yarn and still achieved a nice effect? I'm using US#2's on my Cobweb Lace Shawl... but I've used US#4's and 5's on other lace patterns.... Weeellllll, you didn't specify size of yarn - I knitted a shawl for
DD using Homespun and US10.5 My very first knitted item, a baby sacque with a lace chevron pattern using baby yarn was done on size 6 needles. . . well no one told me the lace was 'suppose' to be an advance project Sonya Noreen's Knit*che wrote: On Mon, 5 Jan 2004 09:59:17 -0600, Karen in MN wrote: I used a 7 on my Myrna Stahman's lace seaman' scarf. I'm knitting my 2-ply J&S on 6mm needles. My swatch on 4mm and 5mm
wasn't lace enough. I didn't actually swatch on the 6mm but I'm thinking this may be TOO open... My 5.5mm needles are busy or I'd have used them. OK - I missed it
Well then, I'm no help, other than CO enough stitches for 2-3 repeats of the pattern and play, start with 'recommended' and do several rows and then start increasing the size of the needles, you could use a safety pin to mark the beginning of each change, then take it off the needles (no need to bind off- unless you want to block too) and take a look - one will yell at you - "I'm the one!" Sonya LOL, Sonya, I *thought* I did say lace-weight yarn.... Noreen |

Hi Noreen,
If my memory serves me right when I made knit lace placements I used a size 3 or 4 needle and they turned out lovely. I wouldn't do it again as I used crochet cotton and I didn't like knitting with that, but they made a nice wedding gift. Hugs, Nora |

I just over the weekend blocked a shawl. It's the Birch Leaf shawl
(or something like that) from Rowan 34. I used Madil Kid Seta, which is the same yarn as Rowan Kidsilk Haze and K1C2's Douceur et Soie. It's 70% kid mohair and 30% silk; each ball has 225 yards and weighs 25 grams. It's very fine stuff, with a mild fuzzy halo. This pattern was knitted on size 8 needles. I made it a bit smaller than the pattern, trying to calculate how many stitches to cast on (starts on the long edge and decreases to 1) so that I'd use only the 2 balls that I had. Of course I ran out at around 30 stitches and had to buy a third ball, which I have most of left. I'll try to cast on and do a small scarf with the rest. The shawl is about 76" tip to tip, and around 36" long. It is very airy and looks delicate. Myrna Stahman says for lace you should use needles at least 2-3 sizes bigger than what the ball band recommends, or what you'd usually use for that size yarn. In addition to swatching, be sure to block your swatch stretching it out as much as you would your finished project. If you've not experienced the miracle of watching your crumpled-up kleenex transform into gossamer, you're in for a treat! Of course, this assumes you're using wool, mohair, alpaca, cashmere, etc. and not acrylic. Debby the lace shawl junkie Noreen's Knit*che wrote in message .. . I'm using Jamieson and Smith's Cobweb yarn for my (own pattern) wedding ring shawl, and using US #2's for that.... it's a very very fine yarn, about the size of crochet thread.... THAT I have no qualms about... oh, and it IS wool btw. I'm designing a Persian lace afghan that will also use a laceweight yarn, but not quite as tiny as the J&S's.... Thanks for your input!
