Default OT completely OT! question about ipod shuffles

Thanks

Sounds great - but I am in Australia (and a rural area
at that!) lol

I can only wish! (BTW - video is not an issue for me. I
can barely see a TV screen, so images on a 2 or 3" screen .
.. . . . . rofl)

Default OT completely OT! question about ipod shuffles

I got a Shuffle for Christmas from DH and I absolutely LOVE IT! We had/have
an older iPod (music only, no video) that he was given as a work thank you,
but it is just too big for me to carry comfortably around. The Shuffle clips
to what ever I am wearing. This is, of course, now the joke of the
household, because I will be up in my formerly quiet sewing room, stitching
up a storm and rocking out. Annie Lennox's newer album is the current hit
for me. But it's so hard to stitch a straight line when I'm bobbing my head
up and down and belting out the tunes LOL. I am on a Windows Media Center
(XP) computer and have no issues.

Cool! That works very nicely. I just hadn't explored it very much.

I am new to all this. My music all sits on the "spare" hard
drive of my PC ATM. I am only just venturing into ipod/mp3
player territory.

Cheryl, Apple puts out a version of iTunes for Windows/PCs, so the
answer to your question is yes. You can certainly load up on songs
with any iPod and your PC -- but, to go a bit further, you can also
begin to explore the world of podcasts. These are like radio, but you
can choose when to listen, and there are podcasts for literally *any*
subject. You can choose from quilting, foreign language, technology,
world and local news, humor, educational subjects, etc., etc.

I have an iPod, and I find myself listening to podcasts much more often
than to music. Some of my favorites are Classic Tales (literature),
Podictionary and The Word Nerds -- those last two were recommended to me
by Kathy A.

Have fun with your iPod!

Cheryl,

You've already got lots of info. Just to let you know that you can buy
online from Apple if that's what you decide to buy. I bought 2 ipods
(separately) last year for the kids and they were sent very quickly. They
come straight from the factory - delivered by courier and I think if you
spend over $100, postage is free.
There are a lot of alternatives - we've had/have several different mp3
players - Creative Labs and Irivers as well as the Ipods. I really love my
little 2gb iriver - audio only, but I really don't need video at the moment.
The Ipods were purchased for the video capacity. They were the best value
for money as far as hard drive size and screen size were concerned.

good luck and have fun with your purchase.

chris

I also got a dock for my IPod so I can listen when I am sewing. I put
books on tape on it.

Totally agree with Kate. I've been using iTunes on a PC, without and iPod,
and it is very simple. I now have an iPod Classic, long story but a
wonderful gift from my guy on Valentines, and I tend to load my music first
into iTunes and when I connect my iPod it syncs automatically. Very user
friendly.

And I don't say that lightly. I may be a computer teacher, and very
computer and software literate, but things like cell phones and iPods throw
me for a loop. You'll manage just fine.

That is all it comes with, but I bought a travel charger and a car
adapter from Overstock and the Dock, which also charges it from
Costco.

The cons:
- Doesn't hold as much music as some people want -- DD is quickly

- *** Battery has SHORT life ****

I did the asterisks on that one so you'd note it. The battery only lasts a
few hours and takes about 2-4 hours to charge. That's the biggest complaint
she (or I) have about it. So if you intend to use it for train trips, make
sure that you have some sort of outlet to charge it on long trips -- or buy
two and swap off.

Another note on charging, you need iTunes to charge it. On our PC at least,
it won't charge unless it can open iTunes and sync up. But that might be
isolated to Shuffles. I dunno.

Sounds like the shuffle or nano is for you, then.

Yes, they load from PCs. You'll need the iTunes software, which you can
download for free. It's very user friendly -- plug the iPod into the
computer, and it loads the music automatically while it charges.

FWIW, if you've never gotten the battery life that was advertised, complain
to Apple and they'll fix it. (They did for me).

If you used to get the battery life and no longer do, the battery may be
worn out. I replaced the battery in mine after I wore it out (about 3.5
years), and love the new one. I don't know if the shuffle has a replaceable
battery.

Can't carry an extra battery for an iPod.

You can get third party charge packs that recharge the iPod on the go.

Apple has their batteries factory-installed, and the only way to replace
the battery is to send the entire iPod back to Apple and have them send
you a refurbished one. My BIL despises his. Says he'll never get an iPod
again, but he'd much rather settle for an off-brand.

Not true. I replaced my battery myself. It's just not for the faint of
heart.
