Default Fat Third??

I've seen refernce to Skinny Thirds, in fact bought a lovely book with patterns
based on them, and can reasonably assume that the piece would measure
12" by width of fabric (40-45"). But how would you make a Fat Third? Cut
2/3 of a yard/ 24" and then halve that for a piece 24" by 1/2 the width of
fabric?

I've never heard of it, but why not? A fat third would measure 24" x
22" making it nearly square.

That's what I'd do, in the absence of instructions to the contrary.

Someone's going to have to draw me a picture here. I can't seem to
visualize how to take a yard and cut it into thirds, each measuring what I
think of as "fat". The truth is, I've been finishing up a quilt top today
and my math skills are exhausted. However, since I assume Mickie is reading
the responses to her post, this is a welcome opportunity to say how tickled
and proud I am when I see "by Mickie Swall" in the quilting magazines. Just
always think, "She belongs to us". We're proud of you, Mickie. Polly

Aw, Polly you make me blush g but thanks for the kudos!
I can't wait til you get a digital that work in the Swamp, I'm really
looking forward to seeing your work some day too!
(and maybe a peek at you too?)
As to cutting a yard in thirds, you could get either three skinnies
or else two fats and one skinny. (what Lia said makes sense to me)

My guess would be to cut 2/3 of a yard and then cut it at the fold.... just
like a fat quarter is cut. JMNSHO

Take a scrap of paper near your computer, and draw a rectangle on it
that's nearly square. Label the side of it 44 to indicate the fabric
the way it comes off the bolt. Label the top of it 36 to indicate
inches in a yard. Look at it, and imagine buying a yard of fabric of
that dimension.

Now on the bottom, label 12-12-12. That's 36 divided into thirds.
On the right side, write 22 and 22. That's 44 divided in half. Draw a
line between the two 22s splitting your fabric in half parallel to the
selvage. Draw a line after the second 12 to indicate 2/3 of a yard.

Your fat third should measure 22" x 24" which is nearly square. If a
yard of fabric costs $9/yard, a third of fabric should cost $3/yard for
that (nearly) square.

That's how I have seen them sold. There is a shop somewhere that appears at
Arizona quilt shows and sells fat thirds rather than fat quarters.
