From: "Joseph Hurley"

....... In her reply to my post, Rachel wrote, in part: "This woman has a

valid
point."

Given that my original post was clearly listed as by "Joseph Hurley,"
(that's me) might that not indicate that the original poster is, well, not a
woman? ........

Just one thing to be said in defense of Rachel's faux pas -- lots of M/F
couples use just one e-addy and that is often in the mans name. When I first
got online, I used DH's e-addy. Doesn't make it correct for anyone to assume
that you were female -- just a logical reason for Rachel having done that. All
of that being said -- I don't recognize your name -- are you new? Of course,
being with AOHell can have a lot to do with not recognizing you -- you could
have been posting for umpty-zillion years and I likely wouldn't see the posts
-- LOLOL!
Not sure when Raechel will answer your post so I am butting in :-). She and
I get together whenever I am visiting DD in Lizard Land. I lived there for 35
years (OY the heat) and 25 of those years was in Scottsdale. Raechel lives in
the north eastern part of Scottsdale but I lived right down amidst the squalor
of Camelback & Hayden! I believe the church you mention is still there but
Caf' Casino and Los Arcos Mall are both gone. Chez Louis is probably still
there but don't know for sure as I haven't been downtown Scottsdale in some
time since DD moved to North PHX. We are usually there for the holidays and
you'd have to bribe me with a LOT of $$$ to get me down to Old Town that time
of year!! CaoMeow ^;;^

It's also sometimes erroneous to assume that just because the poster has
a male name that they are male. Besides the posting under the spouse's
name issue, some of us just have misleading names. One is generally
safer to just never assume.

Mea culpa. I know better; my only excuse was that I wasn't thinking.

OK; this is the original poster here.

I don't mean to nitpick, but I'm afraid there is a bit of stereotyping at
work.

In fact, I am, as I like to tell friends, one of the 8 male

cross-stitchers
on the planet -- we have an annual meeting in a phone booth in Chicago

each
year.

Like I said, I don't want to nitpick. But one might want to refrain from
assuming that all persons who (a) cross stitch and (b) post to a
cross-stitch newsgroup are women. Even if one might be right 99.99% of

the
time, here's the 0.01% to be careful of!

That having been said.

Dont worry, Jpseph, this sort of thing happens all the time. Often
it is someone new, who doesn't realise that there are any male stitchers
at all. However, there are a lot more that 8 of us altogether; there are
about that number who post on rctn, and there is a group of 50 or so
others who have their own group. I dont have the addy; I prefer to stay
with the ladies. In case you have not seen it, do visit my web site at
www.ncf.ca/~bf906, for some male oriented patterns.

I'll have you know, some of us "womenfolk" like them, too. g

And to Joseph: A lot of posters here think everyone here only does
cross stitch, too. So, you often get responses that assume that's what
the stitcher is talking about. As Jim said, often it's newbies. They
soon figure it out.

Wow 8 male cross stitchers and they're all in my town.... I bet I've
seen one of you on the way to the train, as a matter of fact. =) Saw
a gentleman a couple of months ago at Union Station carrying a set of
24" wide scroll bars with a WIP mounted in one hand and his briefcase
in the other. I was so tempted to follow him to his north concourse
train just to ask what he's working on.... but my own south concourse
train was leaving in less than 10 minutes and I didn't think I'd have
enough time.

Well, Joe, I admit that it's annoying to be ignored (or re-gendered?)
However there are women who post to this group using their husband's
name (why? I don't know?) Anyway- I have this calendar too (got it
for my birthday in October and opened it in January) and was just as
disappointed as you.

For those who say (somewhat snarkily I feel) that you can CHOOSE your
own colors - that's true, particularly on the simpler patterns (like
the little teapot or the snow boots.) But some of the patterns -
there's a gorgeous rooster, for instance - use a lot of different
colors, subtly shaded, and there's no way I'm going to pick all those
colors out. No, I'll just look at it, save a few of the patterns, and
will be WRITING to the PUBLISHER about this. Some of the French
(Idees de Marianne) patterns - that come in little books - use colored
block symbols with no DMC numbers. But they're simple patterns.

Looks like this thread died out about a week ago, but just in case someone
is still wondering...

At the very back of this calendar is a swatch page of DMC thread colors to
refer to if you want to match the colors on the charts. It does NOT have a
symbol chart.

For the people who promised not to look ahead, just flip the whole thing
over and work from the back. There are a couple of advertising pages, then
the swatch page.

Hope that is helpful,
Kristin in Gretna

Apparently enough people complained to the Publisher about the
Calendar not including a DMC symbol key that they are going to post
one on their website shortly! Here's their email reponse to the
problem, sent Jan. 7th:

"The 2004 Calendar was our first edition and we are committed to
making
each succeeding Calendar better! To this end, next years Calendar
will
not only feature compelling new designs but will also incorporate such
things as a consistent master color key having DMC colors, numbers,
coordinating symbols, revised instructions and improved stand."

"In answer to your request for the 2004 edition, DMC color numbers for
each day will be available on our website, www.accordpublishing.com,
within the next two weeks. Once in our website, click on the Calendar
Section and then on 2004 Cross Stitch Calendar."

However, it's been found that the color representations are not
accurate.
