So, a Singer walking foot 111W155 isn't a machine capable of sewing a
couple
of layers of canvas? Did you read my post at all? Why so negative?

Steve

Where in your earlier post did you mention the machine specs???? Am I
missing a post or something??? o_O

How many Singer walking foot machines are there that are made for canvas?

Whoopsie!! Didn't see *anywhere* in your post where you specifically
stated
that your SM was *made* for sewing canvas. Can you please cite where
exactly
you specified that it's an Industrial machine?
Thanks!!

BTW, she didn't sound negative to me at all ... she sounded like she
was
trying to warn you so you don't try to do something that would eat up

your
motor/break your machine. If I was thinking about sewing heavy canvas
on
my
quilting/sewing machine, I'd sure as *&$% appreciate it if someone

warned
*me* not to break my baby!!

The machine came from an upholsterer and canvas sewer.

And you said that in this thread where???

Please point to it, thanks.

If I had a light sewing machine, I would be asking questions about the

machine, not the
thread.

P'raps *you* would know that you would ... but then, I don't exactly
occupy
space in your head, now do I? Nor does anyone else responding to your
thread. How the hell would I know what you would or wouldn't ask!

You DID see the question about the thread, didn't you? No? sigh

I saw a thread that asked about what kind of thread to use in sewing
canvas
... nowhere at ALL did it state that you were using an industrial machine.

P'raps you should reread your thread. And p'raps you should just get a
gripola and realize that others were trying to be helpful with someone
who's
experience and knowledge they weren't sure of -- no one was trying to be
snotty. But I can tell you ... no one likes having their toes stomped on
when they're offering ASKED-FOR assistance. So don't be too surprised if
others take the same attitude as those who've already responded to this
thread ... or if no one else responds out of concern that you'll take
*their* response out of context.

FTR, when more than one person thinks you overreacted and thinks you
weren't
very clear, usually, it means you weren't.

............

BTW, why are *you* being so negative and snotty???

Because I asked a simple question, and I get someone jogging down the
road
to Walmart.

Where in the hell did you get that idea???? I didn't get that from her
post
.... but then, I'm reasonably sure I'm sane.

'scuse me.....

Did all y'all miss the forty-eight bajillion posts Steve has made over
the last several months, and the accompanying threads, about picking
the right machine for this project?

It would be reasonable to assume that he has collated the advice,
considered it for awhile, and made his selection with the project in
mind.

As to the thread....

I find that for heavy projects cotton carpet thread works well, but it
sometimes is a bit of a problem in my heavy work machine. Bobbin
mostly. So I usually look for a linen thread at the leather or marine
shops. The thread from the marine shops is preferred by me, because
the thread for leather work is often only available heavily waxed(1).
There are a good many threads available for sailmaking and repair that
might be more suitable for your purposes than the plain linen I am
generally on the lookout for. The linen is as strong or stronger than
the cotton, at a lesser thickness, which is what I am generally after.
Aother option would be an outdoorsman's shop, something made for tents
perhaps?

NightMist
(1) the waxed is better for sewing leather, but the local shops sell
for handwork mostly, and you could almost make candles from the excess
that scrapes off when waxed thread for hand sewing leather goes
through a machine. Beter to get unwaxed, modify it myself, and save on
machine maintainance.

Well, in the first place, are you sure that your sewing machine is up to
the challenge of sewing heavy-duty materials? If you bought it from
Walmart, it probably isn't.

But hopefully you have a nice commercial machine that will handle this
with aplomb. There is special UV-resistant outdoor-type thread. Any
place that sells fabric like Sunbrella and the like will have what you
need. Sailrite.com sells it, so does questoutfitters.com and probably
other places as well.

I'm getting ready to play around with my walking foot Singer to make some
awnings. What kind of thread should I get? I want strong, and UV
resistant. Is this something available at a local store? Maybe an
upholsterer's supply? There's one in Vegas near where I live. Or can I get
it online cheaper?

I didn't miss them ... nope, never having seen them didn't shave a bit off
my nose. For one thing, I don't usually visit this NG ... for another, nope,
I didn't pay any attention to his other threads -- for some reason, the
thread titled "Holy ****" just didn't pique my interest.

For yet another, I took this thread's post at face value ... I'm not usually
in the habit of researching goobers on the web -- unless they're
interesting, intelligent or otherwise worth the time of plugging their name
into Google or if I'm *that* bored ... this guy wasn't and I've got enough
projects to keep me from being bored ATM!

I'd find it a bit ... n00bie ... for him to think that merely because he's
seen fit to post all over the NG, spewing details that only he really cares
about means that all who happen to wander upon *one* of his threads would
have immediately *read* every post he's ever written, completely ridiculous
and silly. Just because he chooses to post a bajillion times (taking your
word for it -- YOU, I respect) doesn't mean that the entire NG really gives
enough of a **** to read'em.

It would be reasonable to assume that he has collated the advice,
considered it for awhile, and made his selection with the project in
mind.

From his frothing reaction to some harmless posting (and please pardon me if
he's a friend of yours) that sort of intelligence seems a bit beyond him.
P'raps he's more reasonable on his average day ... but today? Nope.

Gentle snippage

You didn't mention the model number before. The reason I commented on
the machine was because once upon a time, I tried sewing something too
heavy with an otherwise decent home machine before and caused myself an
expensive repair.

But I didn't consider that post to be negative, because I did give you
the information you were looking for, right?

Instead, you only posted what I said, jumped on it, and commented on
Samantha's comments with no comments. She apparently has something against
Walmart that has nothing to do with the questions asked.

My comments had nothing to do with Walmart, unless you consider the fact
that they don't sell heavy-duty commercial sewing machines something
against them. I could just as easily said Target, which is a store
similar to Walmart, but not as many people would have recognized them.

Well, I have hung around this newsgroup for over 10 years, and I am
sorry (for those who asked) to say that yes, there have been people with
light-duty sewing machines bought on Ebay by fraudulent advertisers or
places like Walmart who would be asking questions about the thread and
not the machine.

Yeah, and the first good information you got came from the person whose
post you so soundly criticized.
