Default Leather purse pattern/instructions?

Does anybody know a source for instructions using a whole deerhide (garment
leather, but with "defects") to make a large purse? Preferably, with minimum
cutting, so that the fact that it is a hide is obvious. I plan to patch and/or
bead the holes, and bead over the discolored areas. I figure it will need
lining, and possibly facing, as well as a way to have a strap that doesn't rip
out of the rest of the purse, and I need to know the best way to put these in
so it doesn't mess up the leather ( the leather is very soft, and a regular
sewing needle goes through it easily).

So far, I've looked through my "Beads to Buckskins" books (1,3,5,6,7,8,9,11),
and tried Google and eBay for "leather purse patterns"... no joy. Of the 6
listings in Google, all were for finished purses (even though I specified
"patterns"). A link from a side bar link led only to one pattern for making a
simple square purse out of "patchwork". The B to B books had plenty of
instructions for dresses, but only for tiny, simple pouches; pictures of beaded
purses mainly demonstrated solid designs, and it looked like most were on
saddle leather or suede (no instructions, but the shapes were trimmed, so they
may have been cloth).

I don't know of any patterns, but I've seen a purse and will try to describe
it. Fold a small hide in half, about 2/3 up on the sides. Using a heavier
leather (moose would look best with it, but you may have to you cow), make a
single strap that will begin and end at the bottom, going up the sides and
becoming the strap. The front part that didn't get sewn can be left mostly
natural for the piece that goes over the top. The other part of that will
be doubled back on itself, and looks good cut into fringe. You could also
draw the bag partly closed.

That description sounds very interesting, Tina. I'll have to dig out
some of the hides DH gave me and give it a whirl. hmmmm... custom
designing my own purse... I could make as many inside pockets as I want
and not have it look like a suitcase!
