Knitting with two or more colours got me over that. ;-) Two balls is fine if you've got them (though you do have twice the temptation for the cat dangling from your work then). Often I only have one ball of yarn left when I reach the sleeves of a baby outfit for example and that's when working from both ends of the ball is a very handy thing indeed. Good point! Didn't think of that. I'm always afraid I won't have enough wool so tend to buy an extra ball or two. (Not very thrifty, I know.) Do you have a special gadget that allows you to take the wool from the inside and outside of the ball at the same time? Even with the skeins direct from the store you can pull from both the inside and outside. If you wind hanks into balls, you can make a center pull ball without a ball winder. sue |

I tend to wind a lot of balls because I actually prefer knitting and crocheting from a ball. But I had no idea you could wind a ball by hand, on your hand, and make it a center pull. Now I'm wondering how you do it. Murielle There's a video that demonstrates it here - http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting...iques/misc.php You can also use a small tube with the yarn end pulled through it to start the ball, and pull out the tube when you're done. sue |

It is not too hard to wind a centerpull ball by hand. I often use my
knitting sheaths, or (bamboo) needle cases, or a piece of plastic pipe as my form. (For quick, easy, cheap, and ugly, it is hard to beat a piece of 3/4"PVC pipe.) see http://www.anntorrence.com/blog/2007...ind-a-pul.html With some care and skill you can wind centerpull balls without a form but it is much easier with something to wind the yarn on to. see http://goddess1.typepad.com/i_hide_y...pull_balll.pdf or http://www.jimmybeanswool.com/secure...le.asp?iaid=18 Winding such center pull balls was the first bit of knitting that I did that impressed my wife, because her mother, was a very fine knitter, who never learned how to wind center pull balls. Now I don't wish I had a $30 ball winder any more and can stop trying to find one for sale for dirt cheap!! -- Every job is a self-portrait of the person who does it. It will save me having to chase a ball of wool all around the room where I am working and also have the advantage of discouraging a very playful little cat from tangling my yarn up. -- |
