He won't say so because he's too modest and considerate of the rules, but it is one of the best, if not the best, polishing lap for gemstones(especially those above 7.5 Mohs). I currently use light machine oil as a lubricant. Works well, if you put on a drop or two, spread it evenly, then wipe with denatured alcohol on a paper towel. CZ, spinel, sapphire all come up to polish very nicely from #3000 prepolish. The Batt is charged with 50,000 mesh diamond spray. -- Saint Séimí mac Liam Carriagemaker to the court of Queen Maeve Prophet of The Great Tagger Canonized December '99 |

He won't say so because he's too modest and considerate of the rules, but it is one of the best, if not the best, polishing lap for gemstones(especially those above 7.5 Mohs). It also turns out to be one of the best cutting laps, especially for quartz, which tends to clog up bonded laps. I currently have five BATT laps - I think I want one more. I would actually do a bulk charge with powder, to start with. The BATT lap can soak up a lot of diamond, and just keeps getting better. Most any light oil will work as a lubricant. WD-40 is popular with some faceters. My experience has been that the uniformity of particle size is better in the sprays. When I start picking up zinc on the facets, I just give it a spritz or two and run a bit of CZ back and forth a couple of times by hand in a sweeping motion with the lap turning quite slow. Don't care for the smell of WD-40. I tried mineral oil for a while but found it to thick. When the lap starts to talk to me too loud, I often just put a tiny bit of oil on the facet I'm polishing and sweep back and forth. -- Saint Séimí mac Liam Carriagemaker to the court of Queen Maeve Prophet of The Great Tagger Canonized December '99 |

Al Balmer Sun City, AZ Yes, that might be a little lighter than the sewing machine oil I use. It doesn't say sewing machine on it, but that's the viscosity I'm talking about. About half the droplet size of mineral oil. The valve oil should do better. Being a trumpet player married to a trumpet player, parents of a trumpet player dating a trumpet player, you'd have thought that would have occured to me, but it didn't. Go figure. -- Saint Séimí mac Liam Carriagemaker to the court of Queen Maeve Prophet of The Great Tagger Canonized December '99 |
