Test for true silver plating?
I just won a "silver-plated" widget on eBay. How can
I test if it's really silver-plated when I get it? Can a jewelry store tell? Can they do it for free for one item? Is it an easy and reliable test? Thanks! |

Is it an easy and reliable test? Shoulda just gotten real silver in the first place--not plated crap, which is prolly not even worth the worry, really--it's such a tiny amount of silver it almost hardly matters*. *When I say "hardly matters", that's me being nice--I think most plated stuff is usually so cheap and crappy, it matters not at all. :-p That's just me, of course. -- m3rma1d -- To reply in email, carefully remove my panties. |

Is it an easy and reliable test? Thanks! Lightly sand a tiny, inconspicuous spot on the widget to remove any clear lacquer that may be protecting the finish. Rub the spot with a freshly cut piece of onion or garlic. If the spot turns brown in a few seconds, you have silver. Remove the tarnish with baking soda. |
