Default Book Review: Kate McKinnon, Project Workbook 2003

Kate McKinnon, Project Workbook 2003.

This book is available directly from the
artist --http://www.modernnymph.com -- and from a few vendors. Jane's Fiber
and Beads had a few this last Saturday in Nashville.

The book is $65, so I thought long and hard before I ordered it. It was my
Christmas/Hannukah present to myself.

The book is spiral bound and self published, but it's of much higher quality
than one usually finds in such cases. It's printed in color on glossy stock
and is a beautiful book

The sections on basic techniques are, in my opinion, excellent. It's not an
"everything you ever wanted to know book", but it does have a great many
very useful sections, and instructions for the beautiful shag carpet of
pearls bracelet.

All in all, I'm glad I spent the $65. I've picked it up and gone through it
several times now, and I've learned and enjoyed each time.

I bought it too and have really enjoyed it - though I've tried a couple of
her teqniques and did not love they way they looked with my designs (in
particular the double loop for making resizes easy - was not elegant enough
for my purposes, though it looks good with her stuff).

It inspired the first bracelet on this page however:

and I'm sure I'll be going back to the book again and again. It also has a
bit about PMC and some of the info was new to me so that was good too.

I was privileged to meet Kate and to acquire a copy of her beautiful book in
Tucson. First, Kate is an absolute sweetie. But even sweeties can produce
marginal books. NOT this time! Kate's book is beautifully photographed (and
when can Dustin Tabor eye candy NOT be good???), her techniques are clearly
explained and well illustrated, and the book is produced in a way that's
splendidly durable. I'm mostly focused on making da beedz, but this book
helps me and MAKES me want to do more with them. Bravo Kate!

All of your pieces are gorgeous, Pam. Who made the lampwork in your second
piece from the top on that page?

Thank you Sooz! I made those beads - they are far from perfect, but I just
love them.

oooh, ok - I'll see what I can come up with this weekend I'm currently
searching for a baby sitter so I can make beads one or two afternoons a week
as well. Wish me luck on that!
