Default Alternative to polyurethane spray?

Hello,

I am looking to use a less toxic version of polyurethane spray. I use
polyurethane to fix patina on copper but even though it works well I
hate it. Has anyone come up with a less toxic product? I am wondering
if a gesso or water based varnish could be used to fix the patina?

Also anyone have an alternative to 3M Super 77 spray mount for
sticking down paper?

Thanks,

Tim

There are a number of brush-on, water-based acrylic finishes; I've had good
luck using some of them to seal metal-finished projects. Pick some up and
do some test pieces to see which ones work best for you.

YES Paste (made from wheat) and Coccoina Paste (from potato starch) are
both excellent, archival-quality pastes especially suited for paper work.
Working with paste is a bit more labor intensive than using spray, and the
set-up time is longer, but I like the results; both are pH-neutral and
don't cause paper to buckle.

A google search should turn up numerous suppliers for both products.
