Default Question about fleece

The clerk who cut the lovely fleece fabric I bought to make baby blankets
told me that I didn't need to sew the sides. She said I could just cut it
and it would stay--even through many washings. Does anyone know if this is
true. I find it hard to believe.

Yes, it's true, if it's the fleece like Polarfleece. It will not ravel,
if that's what you're asking.

If you're making this for a baby, don't "fringe" the sides; this could
be a choking hazard. Just cut it to size.

Thanks for the info. I will just cut the fabric. This will save a lot of
sewing time. The baby needs the blankets now.
I have seen the fringe effect and like the look of it but you are right
about the choking hazard.

Very cute idea!
thanks, aeromom

If you have pinking shears, you can cut all 4 sides with them and it
makes a
*very* nice no-sew finish :-)! The other thing I do is to cut all 4 sides
with
regular scissors and then use my "shell tuck" stitch (looks like
___/\___/\___)
on all 4 sides. This is especialy nice for a little girl's blanket as it
gives
a scalloped edge look. CiaoMeow ^;;^

I've read somewhere that fleece shouldn't be used in the crib as the baby
might just roll over and put the face into it and not be able to breath.
But then it's been a LONG time since there was a baby in my house.

no blankets, no bedding in a baby's crib at all. not until
the baby is reliably able to turn over & sit up by its self.
my mom found me with a blanket wrapped around my head at 4
months. good thing she checked, as even if the baby doesn't
die it could suffer serious brain damage from bedding getting
around the face.
much better to put the baby in a blanket sleeper or a sleeper
bag (looks like a fleece or flannel fitted tank top that ends
in a bag around the feet).

They also have wavy-edged rotary cutter blades
that produce a nice scalloped-type border.

I like to do my edges in a blanket stitch of contrasting colored embroidery
thread.

Easy to check this out --- just hold the fabric over your face tightly ---
if you can breath easily thru it, then it is safe.
