I crochet crib blankets and sometimes edging. Ponchos come off of the
triloom, everything else is knitted.

I've done all of those in both knit and crochet..mostly i decide by what
yarn i have on hand and how quickly i need whatever the item is. ( crochet
if i need it fast and i have enough yarn at home: knitting if its not a
hurry up project and i have less yarn)
don't think thats too much help tho

If something is likely to swing freely and catch on things,
I'd prefer crochet because it won't run as fast as a knit
that has caught on a nail/door handle/chair arm.
So I'd say crochet for ponchos and sturdy shawls,
but knit for stoles/wraps/and nicer shawls.

Always crochet for all. Just find the right pattern and colour combination.
Oh, almost forgot - and right yarn - otherwise what is the advantage of the
slowly acquired stash.
