Default Lettering Font

Has anyone a recommendation for a suitable computer font to use for
lettering purposes - nothing fancy. I haven't found one that looks
elegant but doesn't have excessively thin sections or fragile serifs.

I have had good luck using Times New Roman for three and four inch letters.

Search for true fonts, when you enlarge then they don't distort.
