Default Barf cover

So I made some string blocks, half light/half medium some months ago. Only
the second time I'd done strings and the first was just little fellas. These
were 10" blocks. After making a bunch I laid them out and said--well, I
shouldn't repeat what I said. Fortunately the ones which were light/dark
looked fine and they are a WIP for DH & myself. But these others...

Last weekend I sewed the 4 which were the least appalling into a "God's eye"
design, added denim all around and it actually turned into a decent pillow
for the cedar chest. (I'm still amazed.) The even uglier ones remained. Just
can't bring myself to throw them out--they feel so nice even if they look so
awful it's enough to make me NEVER have my design wall near where we
eat....Finally got tired of moving them around so tonight I've sewn them
together and figure I can cover WIP's with them so if a feline QI cleans
herself or worse (ahem) while perched on them, said WIP will be slightly
protected (the cat--that's another matter.)

I've "seen it said" that no block should ever go unused, but if it's too
ugly to look at, I don't even want to waste more good cloth to make it into
a dog quilt. Anyone had similar experiences?

What we need is some kind of Ugly Exchange. On the theory that one person's
ugly is another person's not too bad, it would be fun to do a sort of
watchagot box. Send it around, people could swap tops more or less
anonymously that way.
