LOL, Diana. Really, - with tears, just struck me so funny.
I have never had a pressure (presser? whatever) foot that wouldn't
stay down. No idea what to do. Sometimes mine gets confused when I'm doing
several thicknesses of denim but other than that, I've never run across the
problem. Polly

That's just it. It reaches all the way to the machine! It just doesn't hold
the fabric... any kind. Cotton, flanelette, towels.... nothing.

Is this a foot you've used before? Or a new one you are trying?

If it doesn't reach all the way to the machine bed when the foot is
lowered, it's the wrong type of foot for your machine.

Low shank - Most popular, all makes where foot height is 2cm.
Slant shank - Singer Slant needle machines only.
High Shank - Some older models 15+ years.
and a few types for specific machines such as industrial models.

Have you checked to see if the feed dogs, those little toothy things under
the presser foot are up or down. Don't know what SM you have so don't know
if the feed dogs can be lowered or not. My feed dogs do not lower but was
having the same problem a while back and found the feed dogs had come loose.

Could it be that your feed dogs are dropped? That would cause the
pressure foot to stop working cuz there is no contact with the dogs.

They can't be lowered, so maybe the feed dogs are loose. I've got a Kenmore

Trust me, my friends, there's more loose about Kate T. than her feed dogs.
Have I ever told you about the time Kate . . .

There should be an adjustment to make the pressure on the pressure foot
"harder". Check your manual for the pressure foot pressure adjustment.
