Default OT Squash blossoms for frying

I posted this on rec.gardens a few days ago, but didn't get any response, so
I'm hoping one of you knowledgeable people know the answer :-)

I want to try frying squash blossoms - how big do I let the male blossoms
get before picking them for frying? Do you wait until they open? Seems
like they'd be easier to dip in batter & fry while still closed.

I would think it would be the same as the day lily blossoms. Pick before they
open. But I can't tell you how to distinguish male and female blossoms.

Thanks. Actually, distinguishing the male from female is the easy part
because the females already have small squash forming very early, at about
the same time the flower bud is developing.
