Default free knit patterns!

Elann has updated their free pattern section. Perhaps these patterns can
provide holiday inspiration for some of you! Looks like they have some
nice yarns on sale to boot...

I've gotten some fantastic yarns from them too! After looking at the
patterns I want to buy more. That green cabled jacket looks really
cool...although I'd probably be more inclined to make the shawl. The jacket
would be fun to make, but I don't think I'd wear it as much as the
shawl...but maybe if I put toggle buttons on it, it would change my mind.

Truthfully, I'm eyeing that "cape" with the buttons down the front. I like
the look of it and the fishermans' rib...i wonder if it would effect the
stretchiness of it if I mixed that yarn with a thin eyelash or accent
thread. I've heard stories about fisherman's rib...does it get stretched
out of shape really easily? If so, maybe the accent thread would be an
improvement. Hmmm. The yarn looks very nice...and affordable too!

I love Elann! I check their site everyday, and have ordered a number of
times from them.

Those patterns make me feel inadequate. Can some of you really create
sweaters that look like that? I don't knit but even if I did, my
sweaters would never look so fine.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! That's too funny...but I know what you mean...that seems to
be 'en vogue' these days to have a skein of yarn look like something the cat
coughed up. I used to think mohair looked that way, but then I was
educated and shown "good" mohair and I can definitely see a difference.
I'll make a note of that though and perhaps not order the Cuzco!

I am making the Cuzco poncho now. It is going fast.
I am tempted by the Highland felted bags.

I ordered the Cuzco yarn in the smoked pearl colour, and it looked like a
brushed rat. I started the Cuzco shawl out of that yarn and hated how it
knitted up, so ended up designing my own shawl in more of a broomstick

lace
on huge 15mm needles. I will only wear the shawl in the house because it
looks like a brillo pad, but at least it is soft and cuddly.

Yes, I did advise Elann of my disatisfaction with the yarn and they gave

me
a small credit to my account. This is the only and only time so far, that

I
have not liked the yarn. And with the price of postage these days I

wasn't
going to send it back.

Dawn, you'll be able to make sweaters like that too! The cables shown look
lots more complicated than they really are. I'm working on an Aran sweater
right now that gets the same reaction. All you have to do is follow the
directions (and take them VERY literally)! Yes, there are cable patterns
that are way more complicated that I would think twice about attempting
(Alice Starmore comes to mind...), but this is doable! Start small...Like
Mirjam suggested, try a sock with a cable pattern on it and then move on to
something else like a scarf and then a shawl...you'll be knitting sweaters
like this in no time! Another tip...on your first cable projects, try
using chunky yarn. This gives you immediate gratification and encourages
you to press onwards. Don't forget to block your work. That makes ALL the
difference.
