shrunk roman shades :o(
finished first cream coloured roman shade for our bedroom yesterday. saw
it had a couple of odd stains from being dragged around that I thought would show with the light coming through (probably water marks). decided to wash it before hanging it. it shrunk! a lot! its not wide enough for the window now..... ( we tried to take a positive attitude. better to know it now than a year from now when I decide to wash them... anyway, thought of adding a stripe on both sides and the bottom. will give it a finished look and might look like we always intended it to be there if we do it right. of course, these were finished, so we are unsure how to attach it.. will post pics if it ever makes it to the window. in the meantime, I am thanking the trees in the front yard for the privacy, since we took down the old window treatments a week ago when we thought we would finish it.. and there is quite a bit of traffic on my new street, both cars and foot... and I am not known for being too modest... ) so i will have 4 hunter green blinds seventy inches wide, with all their hardware, newish but totally not matching our decor anywhere in the house, any suggestions what to do with them besides freecycle them? -- Dr. Quilter http://community.webshots.com/user/mvignali (take the dog out for a walk) |

Might want to think about putting 2 narrow sheers with a top and bottom rod
on either side of your shades to narrow the amount of window needing a shade. It would make it a "fashion statement:." I made Roman shades for my son's townhouse. What I didn't take into
consideration was after they had hung in place a few weeks they began to take creases from being in the open position. This caused them to be two inches shorter than planned. The crease doesn't look bad, in fact it looks natural. The problem is the thin line of bright sunlight that comes in at the bottom window. These are in his media room which he wants absolutely dark. Fortunately I have some leftover fabric and plan to add a folded piece along the bottom. Hopefully I will just be able to staple it into the wood slat that runs along the bottom. That happened to me years ago too. I'd had draperies made for 3 windows
and they were lined and weren't cheap. I thought I'd wash one pair carefully.... Cold water...gentle wash....and draped them in the shade to dry. They did shrink quite a bit in length. The slip cover I'd had made to match also shrunk....Fortunately I put that on while a bit damp but it was never the same. Kind of a chancy thing whether to wash or not I guess...but didn't really care to send to the dry cleaners either....hate those chemicals. Can you hang a "frame" around the shades in a co-ordinate fabric - straight
side panels and top valance, so the shade would be behind them? Then the gaps would be hidden. Otherwise - whenever I moved (25 times in all) I always ended up with curtains or blinds that didn't fit somewhere. I shortened the curtains (some three times) for other windows, and appliqued onto the blinds to use them as screens. My motto - when in doubt . . . . . applique over it!! problem is that we were going for a clean uncluttered japanese feel...
hence the roman shades in ecru. I think the culprit is the lining fabric! Not much experience with this type of curtain, but instead of adding to the
sides, would it work to split right down the middle and insert a subtly contrasting strip? probably not... they have a 3D pattern - that is, the fabric was folded
and little pockets sewn so that they create diamond shapes. i think adding strips to 3 sides might give it a more finished look. cut the first stripe but that is how far I got, and I am leaving for 4 days in mexico, so it'll have to wait one more week...thanks for the suggestion though.
