Kate Dicey wrote: I think I'm bashing my head against a brick wall with this one. It really doesn't matter what people said to you off the group - that's quite irrelevant to my point. You made an error and trod on peoples toes. You compounded the error with attempts to tell us we were wrong, and we are not. The charter forbids advertising IN ANY FORM, and offering thing for sale (that is, in exchange for money) is advertising. clipped gently Kate what charter? Like I said earlier I have may not have the same information on ng's as others. It would be nice that I am not totally losing my mind. ???? thanks juliasb If you look at Larissa's post with the specific charter for this group, it isn't mentioned, though the 'on topic' subjects are, but if you look at this: http://www.faqs.org/usenet/ and see under the heading 'Advertising on Usenet: How To Do It, How Not To Do It', you will find the fololowing:- "Advertising is widely seen as an 'off-topic' intrusion into the discussions of any particular news group (news group is the Usenet word for discussion group or bulletin board). Each newsgroups has a specific set of subjects it is intended to cover, and in order for newsgroups to function as effective discussion forums, it is important that people stay 'on-topic'. If everyone disregarded the particular topics each newsgroups is intended to cover and simply posted whatever they wanted wherever they want, the entire system would break down. Due to the decentralized nature of Usenet, there is no one person or body which can "enforce" the custom of staying on-topic. It falls on each user to help preserve the culture of open discussion and free speech that Usenet has come to embody by not posting off-topic material. This, of course, includes advertising. Advertising is by far the most pervasive form of off-topic posting, and therefore, gets most of the heat." There is more on the right and wrong ways to advertise on Usenet. It has been an accepted custom from the inception of this particular news group that advertising at all in any form is definitely unwelcome. There have been numerous discussions, heated arguments, and even flaming sessions here about this issue. The result has always been the same: NO ads. As a group, we have been rigerous in our efforts to keep advertising out of this news group. Sometimes those efforts have been less than diplomatic. I try hard to remain polite, and I'd be the first to admit that I fail at times. In the present weather conditions it is hard to stay calm and not be seriously irritated when yet another person introduces themselves with an ad. I din't join in the start of this one, but I did send a little note to an advertizer in another couple of no ads groups that said: 'Ad snipped... Please do not send ads to these group. They are NEWS ONLY groups. The correct place for ads is eBay or a market place group. Advertising in a news group will lose you potential sales. Good luck with your correctly placed ads.' -- Kate XXXXXX Lady Catherine, Wardrobe Mistress of the Chocolate Buttons http://www.diceyhome.free-online.co.uk Click on Kate's Pages and explore! |

Please read this fully...... Thank you for your time! My name is Cheyne, the eldest daughter of my mom. Growing up my mom has always had problems with her weight but the past few years, things have gotten bad for her. After having an emergency hysterectomy and nearly dying from blood loss, she came home determined to make herself better. Doctors have told her that the reason she has problems with her thyroids, very high blood pressure and the slowing in her pace come from the fact that she is overweight. She has seriously high blood pressure that is difficult to control, even with medications and the arthritis in her knees has become crippling. She has tried countless diets, pills, supervised diets, classes everything to help her become a healthier person, but nothing has seemed to work for her. I know that if she was to have the gastric bypass surgery that she so longs for, her life would brighten up finally and she wouldnt have all these medical problems that continously plague her. Rather than asking for donations, I asked my mom to start making me some quilt blocks so I could sell them online to make some money for college bills. She is a very honest, loving person and would never ask anyone for anything; in fact she would probably be embarassed if she knew that I had done this for just because she would feel that people would think she was begging which she is not. She is an absolutely WONDERFUL quilter. She thinks the only chance she might have funding her surgery would be to sell her award winning quilt which is listed on ebay right now *You can see it if you look up "Starranch1" on ebay members*. I really dont want her to do that since it is her prized posession, so I am going to try my luck and see how I do at helping my mom. Heres what I ask from my moms fellow quilters in the world, Send a donation of one dollar, or whatever you wish, and I will send you a heart quilt block for each dollar recieved. Either to use them in a quilt or a picture frame, they are beautiful. The dimensions are 3 1/4" inches square and when sewn into a quilt 2 3/4" square. Need certain colors? Just ask! Please send all donations with a self address stamped envelope so i can send the blocks back to you. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me! In our weekly lab meeting we have now this thing that is called 'out of
the box', when each member of the lab in turn is required to come up wiht a subject of discussion that is not related to our work. Some subject have been interesting and led to lively discussions, others have tanked. One of the most succesful ones was 'obesity'. And while a lot of people seem to think that fat people are all lacking in will and self restraint, a small percentage of them do have serious health problems that are the CAUSE of their obesity, not only consequences of it. For that small percentage, diet and exercise, though they can never be bad for you unless you go to extremes, don't really help, and more drastic measures might be required. So while am I still not convinced I believe Cheyne's story, being a skeptic in general and all, and certainly I think that either knowingly or unknowingly (why not post the name of the RCTQer that told her it was OK to ask for money in this newsgroup?) she has committed at least a faux pas, I just want to point out that in some cases of morbid obesity it is not just a case of diet and exercise.... Tia Mary-remove nekoluvr to reply wrote: From: (The HairyFacedOnes 'N Me) ........ Tell your mom to get busy and do it the old fashioned way- eat less and exercise. ........... VBS -- doesn't work if the excess weight isn't from overeating. For me to lose weight, I have to restrict my caloric intake to UNDER 1,000 (800 is best) a day and ALSO exercise for a minimum of 45 minutes a day, 6 days a week. Doing all of that, it will take me about three months before I will see any appreciable weight loss. I am one of those people who have a perfectly healthy thyroid -- as least as far as the standard tests can show -- and Dr's have never been able to find out why I have so much trouble losing weight. Now that I am post-menopausal, it's even worse :-(. I WILL agree -- limit your calories AND exercise. If you over 25 or 30 that's about the ONLY healthy way to lose weight. Not sure if the young woman and her story are on the "up & up" but if she is, I have been where her mom is and the only thing that helped was having my stomach stapled. Even with that, I have to do the 1,000 or less calories a day and the serious exercise not that my body has adjusted to the different stomach size. I once read that constant dieting & exercise for those who are prone to obesity can be a double edged sword. by always restricting your calories and then burning them off with exercis, your body thinks you are in the "almost starving" mode and turns all calories that are not used quickly to fat! The body WANTS those fat stores to help carry it through all of the semi-starvation that constant dieting results in! Not sure how much of that is true but it's an interesting theory!! At 22, I know plenty.. but not what I will know when I will be in my 40's ... This is the age where mistakes are made... Thanks for your comments.. but they are slams.. I couldnt pass that up..At the time I accepted, my mom was told she would get the loan for the operation..I am almost two years into my schooling... I cant move home.. there is no where for me to move to.. They have a small one bedroom house that I shared with my sister that they now live in... I went to community college for 2 years... I dont know where you come from... or how old you are... but you cant get a degree from a local college anymore.. or at least not here... they pull the rug out from underneath you...when you arent looking.. There were people from this damn list.. who actually wrote to me.. and apologized to me for YOUR actions... maybe you should look at those you call your friends and SHUT UP for a minute... people are hurting in the world.. I just needed some help..I didnt hold a sign on a street corner in front of you saying "Homeless will work for food".... Wait.. maybe you are one of those people who kicks homeless people... or screams at them to get a job... I believe in Karma... good come to those who do good for others.. if thats the case.. I will go far in this life... I will be in heaven... Think about your actions... If you were a Man... I would look at you and say... "Do you feel like a BIG man now???? I have been a wonderful daughter.. I was voted Cosmopoliton's Female entrepreneur of the year last year, I have been on the deans list.. made great grades kept my family proud.. I have sat by my mother through thick and thin, while she was in her hospital bed... while she cried.. so dont act or make me seem like I am a bad person because I came on here and shared something with you.... You choose to post in this section to write to people about quilting... shouldnt you be spending time with your friends and children?? Isnt that calling the kettle black??? I have talked to several people from here.. personally via email... you have been the only one... to SNIP at me... You are the one who has something negative to write about everything... I hope you never end up in a situation where you are desperately hurting.. and need help from people.. and you go somewhere for it... It would hurt you, if they spit in your face like you have mine... Thanks for being bitchy.. I have been respectful and kind.. and just trying to tell my story and you have been nothing but ugly... I hope this keeps you awake at night... knowing you hurt someone so young.. Thanks... you must be a GREAT mom.. CNYstitcher wrote in message ... I wasn't slamming, I was offereing other suggestions. If my mother were in this situation, I would do all I could to help her, except post to this group asking for monetary help. If that meant leaving the home that i have worked hard to have, I would. If that meant going into debt, I would. I would go through local avenues of selling my belongings rather than post on the internet - ebay charges a fee regardless of if your items sell, the local paper only charges a fee for listing items. Despite the fact that my mother and I do not get along as well as you and your mother seem to, I would do anything short of taking my own life to help her. That is not a selfish statement, that is fact - I have a small child and another on the way. For them to not have a mother would be cruel to them. My mother wouldn't want my life anyway because she would want me to be with my children. She wouldn't want me to put myself through any hardship, but I would because she is my mom. I am glad that you have a full-time job, you could still move back home, however and save even more money. As I said, these are not slams, just suggestions that came to mind while reading your posts. I am still a child... what can you say you knew at 22?? The same as you know now???? If thats the case then I should be a genius?? I have a whole life to learn, and being 5 feet tall doesnt help any. If you still consider yourself to be a child after making a decision to enroll in a school that costs 40K, then we have extremely different views of what a child is. YOu made this decision, now you have another one that you need to make. I knew a lot at 22, not everything that I know now, but enough to know that I wasn't in a position to attend a 40K school. I was actually accepted into a rather prestigious college - Johns Hopkins - and declined going (even though I *really* wanted to) because of the financial burden it would have put on myself and my family. Instead, I went to a local college and earned my degree. A more responsible choice, and one that I have never regretted. What the hell does your height have to do with anything?? I'm 5'7" whoopie, who cares? Want me to tell you how tall the rest of my family is? It has no bearing on anything but may be yet another way you want us to feel sorry for you, I don't know. I can't see into your mind as to why you think this is important for us to know. I had a cancer scare and would have done anything that would have helped me, with one condition, that it not be detrimental to my family in any way. I had suggested another option that has helped thousands of people and personally, helped me lose 60 pounds. If you didn't want my advice, don't read my posts. If you don't want the advice of others, don't post any more to the group. I said , and will continue to say that I was offering other options. I didnt ask to be hurt... and if anything... my feelings have just been crushed... I didnt ask for you to give me money... I just asked to trade... :*( You didn't ask to trade, you offered things for sale, there is a difference. Any sympathy I felt for you adn your mother (and other siblings) has been decreased by you obviously being so self-focused that you are taking everything thing I said as an attack...the perils of being young....it was offered as optiong, and some were actually questions. If you were hurt, you would want your daughter to do the same... or would you be honored your daughter did this?? MY mom doesnt know I am doing this for her... I just want to repay her for the love and support she has given me... I wouldn't want my daughter to ask total strangers to contribute to my helath care or her college. The way my husband and I are raising our son (and will be raising our daughter) is to be self-sufficient, and to show respect to us. You are doing that in that you are trying to help your mother. How we choose to raise our children is our decision, and there are many other facets that you need not know as our life is just that - ours. YOu chose to share your life with people who don't know you and have never "met" you before. You can't blame any of us for being skeptical. If a member had posted for you, a member that the majority of the group knew, there might have been a little less doubt. HOwever, that didn't happen. I and many others have tried to offer advice in whatever way we could, you have chosen to get snippy with me over my post. I posted without knowing what the entire situation was, so my responses were based only on what you originally shared. Keep that in mind next time you choose to repond. Welcome Cheyne,
I see that you've met the group. ;-) I believe you are the person you say you are and not a troll, just a young spirited and entrepreneurial woman who didn't have the best fundraising idea this time. Heck, I would have probably done a MUCH messier job of defending my name and my honor when I was your age, so stay calm, and please, please remember that everything here is being archived. Speaking of archives, I found an article from the Houston Chronicle about the company you and two your buddies started when you were 19, in an effort to promote drug-free rave parties. I admire young people who take charge instead of taking the usual attitude that nothing can be done, so why bother. I guess that's how you got into some hot water here. ;-) I am so very grateful that my youth has not been captured on the Internet archives. Also, you're using your real name, so this stuff will be available for people to read, and you've got your whole life ahead of you, so just keep your cool while those who don't care about how they come across finish venting. Don't worry, I don't think you've done any real damage. -- KCK ( in Texas) Take out the DOG before sending email Website: http://kckintz.home.att.net/ "Cheyne" wrote in message om... "Kate Dicey" wrote in message ... There is only one way to keep weigh off once we have lost it: a life time of self discipline. Sounds hard, but all the surgery in the world won't keep the weight off if there's no discipline to go with it. One of my primary motivators at present is pain: if I eat the wrong stuff, my gall bladder will create merry hell, and I do NOT want to go there again! If I weigh more, I have more trouble with my fibo. That too can be VERY painful, so I don't want to go there too much either. It can be very hard, but with health issues, one has to be sensible. I agree Kate, I'm following BF's mums advice and I'm cutting down on dairy products to help my once-monthly-pain-in-the-stomaches. Mines not so bad as you, but I understand what you mean about planning. I have to send my dad off with a shopping list for me now! Charlie. |
