my favorite thing
I just washed and half way dried a little quilt. Patted it out on the
kitchen counter and loved it a little while. I think that's called blocking and it did receive a tug or two. And a prayer for God to bless the little one who will be hugged in it - or will chew it - or leak pureed spinach. Sometimes the steps in quilting challenge me; sometimes they defy me - but the patting time is my favorite. What's yours? Polly |

Polly My favorite bit is when I take a quilt out of the dryer after washing it the first time. The batting has shrunk just a bit and I love seeing that 'puffed out' look for the first time. -Irene |

The surprise look (is this for me?) on their face and the joy I get from

I love that moment too, when you can see that it survived the machine
wash and developed the right texture and nothing ran, so you give it a touch of love. But I love even more the moment when all the bits go up on the design wall and I suddenly realize how it all has to go together. Sometimes that moment is a long time coming. There's an interesting article in the April Scientific American about the process of creativity, an interview with a surgeon/musician who is trying to spot what goes on in the brain while we create something. The potential application is that teachers might be able to teach people better if they knew more about it. Polly I really enjoy picking out the fabrics for any of the projects I decide to sew, even if it is just a simple solid color baby blanket, or a piece of clothing. And I love to cut and sew it. But I guess my favorite is when I present the gift and they love it as much as I do and I know it will be used and washed and used some more. Barbara in SC |

oh, gosh, that just made me tear up.
There are warm fuzzy feelings at several steps of the process, from deciding what to do/colors focus/fabric auditions, to sewing it all together [and seeing a mind's-eye project coming together], to the quilting/tying, to the satisfaction of the completed project. The most humbling is as others have noted, the looks of wonder and excitement and happiness from the recipient. For me, the process of creating is a gift to myself, and I simply must get back to that. My little tradition and favorite part comes when I've put in my very
last stitch to sew the binding down. First I lay the quilt over my lap and just feel the texture the quilting has created, and then I wrap the whole thing around me (or I give it a big hug if it's a smaller quilt). I've done that with virtually every quilt I've made over the past 30+ years, and it just feels right! I think I'll start adding a prayer, though, if it's a quilt I'm giving away - thanks for that suggestion, Polly. Picturing a baby snuggling in the quilt, or maybe drooling on it ;-) Bonnie NJ |
