Default OT No more cigarettes

I know I said I was going to quit last year, but I wan't ready to give up my
habit.

This morning I took my last cigarette, broke it in half and threw it away. I
am wearing a Nicotrol patch and have not had a cigarette since 8:30 am. I'm
chewing sugar-free gum and trying hard to keep my mind off of having a
smoke.

It won't be easy. I've smoked for almost 40 years. But I can't breathe
normally anymore (I'm sure the reaction to those paint fumes at my former
job triggered something). Just a few steps and I'm gasping for breath.

Went out this morning and kept busy, but upon re-entering my apartment, I
was staggered by the reek of smoke. Emptied all ashtrays, sprayed them with
orangey cleaning spray. I'll probably have to wash all my clothes and spray
the furniture with some sort of freshener.

I refuse to substitute food for cigarettes. I bought a lot of bottled water
and will have a swig everytime I want a smoke. Ought to help wash the toxins
out of my body. Also bought sugar-free gum.

I'm going to do it this time. I have to. I *have* to. I can't breathe. Any
supportive vibes that can be sent would be greatly appreciated. Any
non-smokers who have some helpful hints on overcoming the urge, please share
them with me in private e-mail. ariel at gate dot net

I know you asked for private email but I hope that someone who is at the
"thinking about it" stage will see these posts and decide to give it a
try. It isn't easy. It doesn't happen the first time (at least, not for
most people). But it is do-able.

You can do it Linda, I know you can.

Several of my friends have given up smoking because of my heart
problems. The Monday night class I go to had quite a few smokers in it.
DH said I reeked of smoke when I got home. One by one they have given it
up apart from one and she goes outside. Since I have taught them may
crafts they did not want to lose me.

Another close friend as been a non-smoker now for 10 months. I have
another friend who has made it through her first 3 months of not
smoking.

I am urging you on your way to being a non smoker.
Vibes winging across the pond to you.
Love
Shirley

Congratulations! I wish you every success in your endeavors to cleanse your
body. On a TV show recently, it was advised to drink fruit juice, especially
cranberry, as the acidity helps wash nicotine from the body. HTH

Linda,

Good for you!

I have never smoked, but as far as tempting things go... one idea might
be to have someone to call when you are REALLY tempted to do it, who can
talk you out of it (just saying that you are feeling that way to someone
might help you get through the moment?)

So, you could come in here and say when you really feel tempted,
especially if there is some contributing factor. Although you are happy
about your new job, the first two weeks or so are bound to be tiring and
stressful, for instance!

If you would like someone to email or even call, let me know (and I bet
there are others who would be willing too!)

My uncle is a minister. When he quit smoking, he kept a New Testament in his
shirt pocket where he used to keep his cigs. When, by habit, he'd reach for
a cig, he'd instead touch his source of faith and strength. He said that's
what got him through it.

If you are not a christian, maybe something else could work as a touchstone
for you - something to remind you of faith and hope - that you'd keep as a
token where you used to store cigs.

I've never smoked, but I'm cheering you on! I think there's nothing better
you can do for your body (not to mention anyone who breathes around you)
than to quit smoking.
