Wow Cheryl.....sounds like you have quite the stash!!!!!

Actually, my little clean up project this evening was done in hopes I

would
get an idea of what to sew next. But nothing came to me.

I need to make 5 new Christmas stockings this year........promised new
DIL.....but I have no solid red. I want to make 2 I Spy quilts this

winter,
but no novelty fabrics. I need border and backing fabric for my Tennessee
Waltz quilt that I'm making, but I don't have enough of anything to match.
So it's definately fabric shopping time!!!! And like you, I have to
travel........it's 50 km to the closed LQS.

Ann...........at a standstill with her projects

Don't worry Cheryl. When you feel you have come to the end of active
teaching, you can still be the focus of the neighbourhood as a resource
and an adviser.

Me too. In the beginning I measured and labeled everything, but as the
stash grew my energy diminished. I like buying fabric at garage sales
because they take the time to do that and I can just slip it into my
stash already labeled.

That's as organized as it will ever get!

Ann you're not afraid that rust would damage the fabric from those pins?
That's what I would be afraid of (I used old pins for ribbons and had that
problem) . I read somewhere in a book about an organizing system that used
index cards. A clipping of the fabric, manufacturing co, date of purchase,
store and the yardage were part of the data. Index cards would be neatly
filled in a box according to colour. When the author had a project in mind,
she would pull out the index cards ect. That's way too organized for me.
The box of index cards would be in a shamble after the first use. I like
tearing through my stash! lol

I don't use anything fancy for tags. Just cut up blank recipe cards.

Then
pin them to the selvage. I use my old bent pins.....you know those pins
that you are not suppose to run over by the sewing machine? LOL

Wow Ann, you seem quite organized. My stash has no labels. What do
you use as tags? My fabric is arranged according to colours. I have a
seperate section of backing, batiks, Holiday, fat quarters and 30's
fabric. That's the extent of my organization. And no, it is not all
neatly folded! I recently went through my stash and gave lots away to
my DMIL's religious organization and it's the reason why it is somewhat
neat looking. That's only because I haven't gone through it like a
hurrican looking for fabric yet.

I don't often refold my fabrics, and I *never* label them, though that's
a wonderful idea. I just know I'd never keep the labels updated. G I
keep my fabrics in boxes on the little shelf space I have, and the boxes
are organized roughly by color. The fabrics are -- as much as possible
-- folded into fourths (selvedge to selvedge, fold to selvedge) for easy
cutting, then fan-folded across the length. That's the extent of my
"organization". G

I get in a "mood" once in a while to organize stash..... but not very
often. All of my stuff is basically folded and in rubbermaid plastic
bins with tops on them... the clear kind so I can see what's in there
before I haul it out to go through it. I don't have it organized
according to color though.... mine is organized more like "absolutely
love and will use" - "maybe's" and "not unless I was threatened with a
root canal". Then I have batting, stabilizers, wonder under and that
sort of stuff in other bins.

Cheryl...... your "stash" sounds extraordinary.... I'd love to drop by
and "paw" through it!!

The only time I refold any of my stash is when I've taken a big chunk off my
shelves to audition and fondle. Never had a problem ironing out the
creases -- either I have a good, hot iron, or my stash gets auditioned and
fondled frequently.

I don't organize with little cards, I use a trained Siamese:
http://www.scampi.pwp.blueyonder.co....e/Jo_page.html
I do like to sort by colour. Also, over the last 5 years I've kept
track of my fabric, book, magazine and "tool" purchases (thread,
needles, etc) in various Word documents. I can just look at those to
see how much stuff I have, because I've been buying faster than I've
been sewing. Joining Stashbuster has helped in that area!

Ann:
I don't regularly refold my stash. If a piece is too creased, I
sometimes launder it again. (Machine wash, tumble dry, then
iron.) BTW: initially I only machine wash and dry, but not iron
new purchases, for storage.

Default Refolding stash

Once it is cut and sewn and quilted - then washed - these are all gone.
