OT Martian Salad?
I find I may need to make something called Martian Salad for the sole purpose of annoying someone. It's one of those jello things....lime jello, cool whip, mini marshmallows...what else? Anybody got a recipe? NightMist -- "To repeat what others have said, requires education; to challenge it, requires brains." -Mary Pettibone Poole |

I have a Pastachio Salad recipe quite similar
Mix together one package of pastachio instant pudding 1 can of crushed pineapple, including juice (the smaller size tin) Add/fold in 1 small tub of Cool Whip Refrigerate My family loves it and it's quick and easy. I took it to a pot luck one time and a lady went back for seconds for more of that "Yucky Green Salad" Ann "NightMist" wrote in message ... OK Ann, this is secretly my most favorite dessert. I know, I hate to
admit, I have to hide to eat it or make it for myself when everyone is gone for one reason or another. Otherwise, they all stand around and make fun of me or make commentary, "Eeeuuuwwww, grosssssssss Mooooooooom" I LOVE Pistachio Pudding! THERE, I admit it! I even sometimes make myself the instant kind and just eat it out of the mayonnaise jar I use to shake it in, with a spoon and then I use my fingers to wipe the inside of the jar clean! So THERE! This is my favorite recipe. For anyone who is inviting me over to dinner, please take note of the ingredients. ;-) My DS's favorite is "Green Jello" - My EX-MIL makes it, I have no idea what all goes in it besides green jello and pineapple - I'll find a recipe for it one day so that I can make it for him - but in the mean time, it is his "Grandma treat" when he goes to visit his dad now so I won't impinge on that. Besides, I think the stuff is "Eeeuuuwwww, grosssssssss Billlllllllllllly!" Hugs, Tina |

Its other name is Watergate Salad. I like it, but not enough to make it. Diana NightMist wrote: I find I may need to make something called Martian Salad for the sole purpose of annoying someone. Anybody got a recipe? NightMist Mum makes lime jello with canned pineapple and cottage cheese. Pretty much the principle is the same... let the jello half-set, then stir in the other ingredients. Then let it finish molding. The important thing is never use *fresh* pineapple- the jello won't set. -georg |

Here's one my mom used to make:
1 pkg lime Jello 1/2 cup pineapple juice 1/2 cup water Boil together two minutes. Add 12 marshmallows to above and let melt. Whip 1/2 pint cream. Add 1/2 pint cottage cheese and whip together well. Cool first mixture slightly and then add to cream mixture. Stir in: 3/4 cup crushed pineapple, drained 3/4 cup nuts (optional) Also this simpler variation from DSIL: Stir together 1 3-ounce pkg lime Jello (dry) 1 small can crushed pineapple, drained 1 small carton cottage cheese 1 small carton Cool Whip This one with pears sounds like the one that has become a staple at my family's holiday gatherings. When Mom died, we decided that whoever got the green bowl she always used for the salad had to make the salad for future gatherings. http://www.nikibone.com/recipe/jello/pearsalad.html Julia in MN -- This message has been scanned for viruses by Norton Anti-Virus http://webpages.charter.net/jaccola/ |

Julia, this is one of my most favorite traditions in our family. We
have a "pass around" dish. Whoever takes it home that Christmas or Thanksgiving - has to bring the dish in it the following family gathering celebration. I started it with one of my grandmothers casserole dishes and it has kept going now for the last six years. It's a lot of fun and we all get to share the dish in between. Hugs, Tina |

Ahh...Now what I know as Watergate salad is that green stuff made with the pistachio instant pudding and the pinapple and cool whip. Hey lookie! That is what this recipe is! *chuckle* Obviously the image of Tina licking pistachio pudding out of a mayonaise jar distracted you. Lots of cottage cheese, a little cool whip, add dry packet of jello, stir, add pineapple and marshmallows, stir. Looks pretty, like fluffy pink clouds. Tastes like someone is trying to hide the fact that it is cottage cheese. Debra in VA See my quilts at http://community.webshots.com/user/debplayshere |

I've never had it... but I'm all for annoying people in fun :-) This is one of those "Jello is an abomination" people. He just happened to mention that his mom made this salad every Christmas and everybody hated it including her. I was thinking a bit of nostalgia would do him no harm! *snicker* I would probably also have one of my "good" jello dishes on the table too. Here is one of my favorites: Frosted stuffed melon 1 honeydew or similar melon 4 oz of cream cheese 1 tablespoon (approx) of milk 1 medium cucumber 1 box of lemon jello 1/2cup boiling water cold water Peel and shred the cucumber. Place the shredded cucumber into a sieve or jelly bag and set aside to drain reserving the juice. Make the jello using 1/2 cup boiling water and cucumber juice + cold water to make 1 cup. Peel the melon, carefull slice one end off and remove the seeds. Wit a sharp knife, carefully enlarge the inner cavity of the melon to a capacity of at least 2 cups, if it is smaller than that. Take a thin slice off of one side so that it will sit without rolling. Set melon opening up in a bowl or a pan small enough to hold it steady. When jello has thickened but not set, stir in the shredded cucumber and pour it into the melon cavity. Paint a thin layer of jello on the cut edges where the end was removed to expose the cavity, and replace the melon end. Do what you will with excess jello if any. When jello has set completely, thin cream cheese with milk to a spreadable consistancy. Stand the melon on its side on the flat area you cut, and frost it with the cream cheese. Chill til you want it. Slice to serve. .. -- "To repeat what others have said, requires education; to challenge it, requires brains." -Mary Pettibone Poole |
