?knitting & Crochet began when?
Hi everyone. I am wondering if anyone knows of any informative website on
the beginning of crochet and knitting. I have been looking but I just seem to find sites with patterns and items for sale. I wanted to see where it all started for both crochet and knitting. Any help will be greatly appreciated. ) Thanks Tammy |

There are a few books: Richart Rutt's History of Knitting has been reprinted in paperback now, and it's about the best that is currently available, though some of his information is a little out of date. There's also a yahoo group, HistoricKnitting, where this kind of thing is discussed. Knitting seems to have begun in Egypt some time between the ninth and twelfth century AD. It seems to have reached parts of Europe in the twelfth century, but there aren't many pieces of evidence yet (some were just found). It was pretty widespread by the fourteenth century, and later several paintings were made showing the Madonna knitting in the round. Crochet is much younger; nobody has officially documented any crochet until the nineteenth century; there is an early, "almost crochet" sometimes called shepherd's knitting, that is just row after row of slipstitch, mentioned around 1811 as being done by an old woman to make warm underclothes for her husband. True crochet isn't documented until later in the 19th century. =Tamar |
