Default Back from Italy and India

HI -- You have all been busy. I frankly couldn't imagine working through all
those messages so after checking on Mirjam (I heard about the bombing in Haifa
while I was gone), I marked the rest read and will start anew. I got back this
noon but there is a 12 hour time change from India to Seattle - so I am not
myself yet.

impressions

Where did yo BRBR
We spent most of the time in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu but also went over to
Kerala for a couple of days -- basically South India. While DH had a
conference, I just enjoyed the trip. Highlights for me were the time spent
outside the city -- we spent the night on a houseboat in the backwaters in
Kerala, went to see a major waterfall, saw a tea plantation and the processing
factory and stayed in a cabin on a wildlife sanctuary. We got to see elephants
living free in the forest along with several kinds of deer, wild boar, bison,
monkeys etc.

In town I visited several temples, stayed in an the home of an Indian family ,
went shopping for traditional clothes, and bought the evenings meal at an open
market. (The chicken and Japanese quail were alive when we bought them and
killed and skinned for us there.)

We met some great people - very talented professional men and women who were
every bit as up on their profession as many here in the states. Their Power
Point presentations of dental research were up to snuff.

The biggest issue for me was the breakneck speed driving - on roads where every
sort of transportation was mixed (pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, bullock
carts, buses, trucks, taxis - both the regular kind and those powered by
motorbikes, and occasional private cars. ) The drivers were skillful but
seemed constitutionally unable to follow another vehicle for any length of time
- they were always passing.

Thanks. It was great. Two days in Venice and the rest of the week in Ferrara,
Italy, were wonderful and relatively uneventful. We saw lots and ate great
food. The conference went well. The last night was a fun party put on from
those in the group who came from the Veneto region - part of a series of
regional parties they put on during the year. We were in Italy for their big
power outage - it was the morning we were leaving for India and fortunately we
managed to get off even though the airport wasn't fully powered up when we had
to leave.

See earlier message for the India portion of the trip.
