Default Big Board cutting board

My DH bought me a Big Board a while ago which fits over my ironing board. I
love it since I can press the full width of fabric at one shot. Now I see
that they have a Big Board cutting mat. Has anyone tried the cutting mat?
With it priced around $80, I need to know if it is worth the expense.

Thanks!

Alice,
Well, as usual, I know nothing about the topic, but
have an opinion anyhow!!
Here is another thing to consider. I question if the
ironing board is sturdy enough to withstand the rigors
of rotary cutting on top of the weight of the big
board. Pressing is a more gentle activity. Cutting
numerous layers of fabric requires some leaning on the
ruler and cutter. Food for thought.
Speaking of which, where's my cuppa coffee??

Here I am with Pat - know nothing about the subject and want to chime in
with my opinion.
I was thinking how great it would be to be able to raise and lower the
cutting board (ironing board). Varying the height would be kind to your body
for a marathon cutting session. And you could move it closer to the tv or
the window and get a change of view.
Bring your cup here Pat, I have a fresh pot. Polly

I saw that cutting board in my recent Clothilde catalog, and wondered about
it. Alice, what type of ironing board do you have? Mine was a wedding gift
and after nearly 18 years, it's a bit wobbly (unlike the marriage!). I've
been looking for a new one, but all the stores seem to carry are short,
squatty ones. They don't have large surface areas at all! I've considered a
Big Board or reasonable facsimile, but need a sturdy ironing board to start
with.

I don't have a big board, but I do a lot of cutting on my ironing board.
I have a 12"x24" mat that fits nicely on the end of the ironing board.
The ironing board is higher than my table, and it is nice to work at
that height. When I need more room, I move out to the dining room table.

And where do you store this big thing when not in use?

I don't know if it will help you, I bought one at Walmart... the base is
sturdy, my complaints were with the mesh part was too flexible. It's a
wider top model. We then took a larger board I think.. 2 ft x 4 ft. Used
a nail gun to quickly attach 1 in x 1 in strips on either side of where
the
original ironing board would go. Fits snug and tight and you can seperate
for easy storage. To finish it, I covered it with a layer of flannel and
then muslin.... used a staple gun. If you want to get fancy, hubby used
it router to round all the edges for me. It has no wobble and I can lay a
cutting board over it and raise or lower my surface.

You do need a sturdy ironing board to support the Big Board. I really,
really like my Big Board but when I first purchased it I just put it
on top of my wedding gift folding ironing board. The legs began to
bend over the next few uses and it was sitting at an angle before too
long. I was able to find a sturdy board at Wal-Mart. Make sure you
look at the legs of the ironing board before you purchase it. They
should be larger than the typical round legs found on ironing boards.

When we have workshops at church I take the Big Board and lay it on a
table. It is low but still better than a small board.

I haven't seen the new mat. Hopefully it will be demonstrated at the
show in Rosemont (Chicago) in April and I can see it before I purchase
it.

I'm not sure about the big board mat but a quilter friend has a mat
that fits the top of her 6' banquet table. It is wonderful to
use. She has the table feet on wheeled risers and it is so great.
I like cutting on that set up.
I guess you would need a second ironing board for ironing if you used
one as a cutting board? I was thinking about getting a kitchen rolling
cart to set up with cutting but never quite found one that was in my
price range and size, not to mention where to put it!
