Default !@#@!@# Spyware!

OH sometimes I could kick myself. I went to one of those 'fun' sites (see
what color potato you are or something who knows) and before I knew it I saw
a quick download msg in the bottom corner of my machine. I panicked, ran a
quick virus scan, all was good. I do run Spybot on my machine. I thought I
had ad aware on but it must not have been.

So now things are crashing and tanking and I am having to, in safe mode,
clean the darned thing up. I know the internet is free and regulation is
not going to work but gosh DARN it I hate spammers and spyware folks.

Thanks for letting me vent.

I totally agree! We run a combination of Spybot, AdAware, and the new
Microsoft Anti-Spyware program. Usually I avoid MS stuff, but in this
combination it's really pretty effective.

I despise spammers and spyware as well. Once, my computer was
completely overtaken by a rash of pop-ups. Because I'm constantly
connected to the internet via broadband, it was pretty much a constant
thing. and while most of the pop-ups were the basic annoying casino/buy
diet pills/win a vacation type things, others contained porn. Eep.

I put AdAware on my PC, and I had to run it three times before
everything was completely gone.

Even with Spybot, once you have a infection you need to disconnect from the
'net and run it several times to catch everything. Still, it's the most
effective thing I've used so far.

You're welcome. Been there, done that. :-(

Last October, I had to format my C: drive to get rid of a major
infestation. Spyware is ultra-sneaky and will hide itself in multiple
places where you'd never think of looking.

Beware of spyware removers: the infestion I got was created by a guy who
wrote a very insidious version and then offered to sell you a spyware
remover -- which was itself spyware. He went to jail, but his program
is still floating around out there and being used by advertisers using
banner ads who either don't know, or don't care, what they're running.

So far, Spybot is the only spyware remover that people almost
universally agree is above reproach. The version that I have actually
blocks domains that are known to use spyware or puts them into your high
security category so that they can't download crap at you. If you have
Spybot, you can also download the latest spyware definitions for free.
Be sure to do that once you get up and running again.

That's 'zactly what I use, after a situation very similar to Gwacie's.
It was HORRIBLE. *shudder*

some site just dump spyware and adware onto your computer, and I'd like
to SHOW him.

After re-installing my OS after I lost my HD, I forgot about
re-installing Ad-aware and Spybot... and when I remembered, a couple of
weeks later, I already had 67 pieces of spy and adware.

Hey Kalera.
I'm not positive but I *think* it was
http://quizilla.com/users/TawnyLeona...0are%20you%3F/

I played the game then there was a button at the bottom to 'see all breeds
at once' or something and I remember it was right around then that the dload
went. It was a day when I was wasting time following stupid links posted in
another forum that are all about play and goofy stuff. Guess it was a
message that I should be torching and not playing, eh?

Oh, and tell you sweetie he needs to get with the times. Spyware is out
there and getting better (sneakier) every day. And lest he think we are
computer neophytes, I spent 15 years as a programmer, am married to an
amazing network engineer, have multi computers etc and run protective
software etc. Not sure why I had adaware off or how it got past spybot.
Obviously it wasn't on purpose!
