I think that most of us who are regulars have started to be more
descriptive when we post wanting to trade and "original copy" of a chart.

I
wonder if using a term like this more frequently would help. That way,

newbies
and occasional posters might not fall into the whole "copy" wording

delimma!
VBS -- it really is a problem for people who don't post here all the time.
THEY know they have an "original copy" but never think to use the term.

To us,
who are so sensitive to the whole photocopy problem, that *one* word

raises
our hackles -- especially when posted by someone not well known. CiaoMeow

Miss Grunge has actually been around for a long time, but maybe she hasn't
posted much (like myself). I think she is a fellow Aussie. If so, it could
be a regional usage of the term "copy", because I knew exactly what she
meant and felt Caryn's reply was a little reactionary.

Ok....just to remind you....I asked her nicely if she could clarify her use of
copy, because the word could very EASILY be misinterpretted here. I did not
assume she was peddling photocopies, I just wanted to give her the chance to
assure the group she wasn't.

But, her calling me a "Needlepoint Nazi" wasn't "reactionary"?

It's all well and good to defend a fellow countryperson, but don't you think
she might have gone a bit far?

Oh I`m sure you`re right - but please DON`T let us forget the primary cause
for the reaction. The well founded objection to illegal copying of charts!
It`s just as well to be reminded, if only for the benefit of newcomers who
don`t know about that!

So, let's all forget about it and put it down to the wonderful vagaries of
this strange language that we all claim to have in common, but don't

really.

Caryn,
If I offered you my 'copy' of the Bible, wouldn't you assume I meant a
published book?? Puhlease. Are you interested in my second-hand,

printed

Wenzler, or do you just fancy yourself as the Needlepoint Nazi?

Hi,
I've got a copy of this to swap. Email me direct if you're

interested.
Cheers,
Miss Grunge.

Can we hope that you used the word "copy" by accident, and meant

that
you
have
the original chart which you wish to trade for another original

chart
owned by
someone else?

Obviously, trading copies instead of original charts would be wrong,
right?

Ditto, ditto! The LNS uses the same phrase as well. If we expect the worst of
people that's what will be recieved!

Since Caryn's a designer I thought it was merited. Illegal copying of
charts hurts _her_.

Unfortunately if we don't clarify the difference between an original
chart and a photocopy of a chart it's far easier for the practice of
illegal copying to continue.

I thought Caryn's initial reply was fine. She was polite and nonaccusing.

Delurking again (I seem to be doing that a lot lately)

I too, would have used the word "copy" to describe a chart that I had
purchased in a store. I would never have thought to clarify with the
word "original", and I've been reading this group for a while : ).
It's what I call a chart in casual conversation with other
cross-stitchers - so I would have just used it in the same sense here.
Technically speaking, it is a copy, since the designer has the true
original. Another case where the spoken word and the typed page can
come across as two totally different things. And I probably would have
gotten a little bit defensive at Caryn's post, even though I know she
didn't mean anything bad by it - it just would have upset me that
anyone would think that I would want to trade a photocopy, even though
none of you know me personally to know I wouldn't do that. I don't
think I would have reacted in quite the same way, however. This
discussion has been helpful overall, and in the future if I have a
chart to trade I promise I will try to remember to call it a "chart"
or "original" and not a copy : )

Mirjam, you are right in chastising me for the sarcastic ending..I really
should have left off that last bit... I humbly apologize and I Will try to
"get a life" and not be so annoyed at others who "slam" people for
doing/saying what they think is right. I guess it behooves (sp) all of us
to give a second thought to what we say, when we say it and how it might be
taken by others... Thank you for pointing this "fault" out to me... I'll try
to behave myself in the future...Might not always succeed but sure will
try... I'll have to now that I know that I have you standing behind me to
kick my b*** if I don't behave... Thank you...AND I truly mean it.

I really am not a part on this debate , but i do wonder, everytime any
one here writes to another Mature grown up person, whose life
circumstbnaces are not known , or only partly known to the
writer,,,this phrase " Get a life " . Do you consider that NICE ?
could you explain to me why after you write so rightly [ and i do
compliment you on this]
I think we all need to be a little bit aware of how we word things on
this or any other group...

why do you than add this .....
? I guess somepeople just have to "get a life"
Marc

and thus doing the opposite of what yourself just wrote.

Because I am aware that sometimes asking for "a copy" can get you

several
angry
posts and emails.

I sent this to both here and email simultaneously, because your

original
post
requested people email you, and I wanted to be sure you saw it in one

place or
the other.

You were much more pleasant in your reply to me in email. Which

doesn't
speak
very well of the impression you wish to make here in public.
Calling me a Needlepoint Nazi certainly reflects more poorly on you

than
it
does on me.

Good morning Marc,
It is 06.43 Wensday morning here , and i opened my window to a very
clear rain washed sky , the sun rises , but her shining in all her
glory , doesn`t fullfil the promise of being a warm day, on the
contrary , it is going to be a cold day. Thus it was very nice to read
your wonderful cynical letter., I still ponder about the term you used
, you haven`t clarified it to me, not the term, nore why you used it ?
Which was my question. First i complimented you , and still do for
your call to be aware how our words are accepted by others. I realy
didn`t mean to offend you , i apologize if you were . i realy wanted
to know why you used that term ? And why you contradicted your own
words ? i am sorry that you felt upset , but cynical answers like
yours , make me doubt your seriousness about taking other`s feelings
into consideration , when posting.
I was always sure that this is not a Se'ance.
Good day to you.
mirjam
ps , and just in case you wonder about my words, we in the east ,
speak many a time in metaphors and proverbs , your first letter looked
like this morning`s sun.
