Basting Spray question
I haven't posted in awhile and want to say hello to everyone. I have a little
bit of a dilemma now and would like some advice. I am one of the leaders (and the only quilter) of a 4-H group quilt project for a quilt the girls have made to enter in the county youth fair next week. They did Crazy for Cowboys which is made up of many offset boot blocks. It came out just beautiful. Because they were all beginners and were exhausted after spending many months piecing, I decided the best way to do the quilting was to use basting spray and have them stitch in the ditch around the blocks at 10 inch intervals (we used warm and natural) and along the borders. Although all the blocks are flat and the quilt looks great, there is a slight wavy effect because of the basting spray. We have tried to pull the fabric away from the sticky batting because the other non-quilters do not want to take any chances washing the quilt which would dissolve the spray. Does anyone have any experience with any other method to get rid of the tackiness without totally immersing the quilt? I wondered if saturating the surface with a spray bottle of water would be enough. The can says if you steam it lightly the adhesive properties will rejuvenate the spray. Unfortunately I think we did the spray procedure backwards and sprayed the batting and not the fabric. :-( Thanks for any advice! |

I think you should ignore those other leaders and wash the quilt. Be
sure to throw a color catcher or dye magnet in the washer with it to catch any stray dye that might want to run. I wash all my quilts after I finish them. So far, nothing bad has happened. I agree with Julie, wash that baby!
I don't think I quite understand why anyone would not want to wash it, aside from the residual effects from the spray which you want to eliminate, the quilt has got to be a little less than pristine after having been worked on by all those hands over the months. Becky |

Wash it! And no, you spray baste in the layers of assembly...lay down the
backing and tape it down, then spray that and put down the batting, then spray that and put down your top (a lot more complex than what I just said though!). You are doing fine! Just wash it with a color catcher and show that baby off! Dannielle "Mrsfrz" wrote in message ... I haven't posted in awhile and want to say hello to everyone.
