2. A Simple Method for China Painting on Enamel
By Cynthia Roode

Although enameling is a new art form for me, I came to it with many
years of china painting experience. Painting on porcelain is a time
consuming process. Each firing requires several hours, and three or
more firings may be needed to complete one painting. A while ago, a
friend showed me how to apply enamel to a small piece of domed copper.
I was fascinated with the process and very impressed with the speed of
the firing, and decided to try it using a propane torch. Playing with
this new media was very exciting and before long I wondered if I could
use the same china paint materials and techniques on enamel that I had
used on porcelain. Much to my delight I found I could! What follows is
a description of the simple painting process I currently use....

3. Patination Safety Considerations
By Charles Lewton-Brain

Jewelers use so-called "oxidising" solutions to darken metals like
silver, copper, brass, nickel silver, bronze and, with specialized
mixtures, on gold. Metalsmiths patinate both large and small objects,
as well as jewelry. We usually think of patinas as being green, but
they come in many colors. There are also metal dyes which are very
adhesive. Paints, epoxy resins and other materials are also used to
darken recesses on work. Metal coloring solutions are often made up of
chemicals in toxic concentrations, so all chemical-lab precautions need
to be taken with them....

Handpiece

5. Tool Modifications for Welding Technology - Part 2
By Mark B. Mann

Custom jewelry projects for tack-, fusion-, and pulse-arc-welding
sometimes call for special welding tool lead attachments. Bench
jewelers often make the required leads using standard bench tools to
better hold parts for pre-assembly and welding. Here are a few tack-,
fusion-, and pulse-arc-welding tool making basics you may find helpful.
Use your imagination to create and make new tool leads that will
accommodate your repair and custom order work. The electrical supplies
for these projects are all standard and were purchased at electrical
supply and/or hardware stores....

6. Manufacturing a Crown Using Welding Technology
By Mark B. Mann

David and Diana Howard, owners of My Jeweler, Inc. in Albuquerque , NM
recently worked with a local church to design and manufacture a crown
to be placed on a popular church icon painting. The church's
parishioners donated jewelry to the cause. Howard sent the old gold out
for refining and received over 4 ounces of fine gold in return. He
alloyed the gold to 14-karat yellow, poured ingots and rolled wire for
the crown. The crown has over 600 contact joints so Howard decided to
use tack- and pulse-arc-welding technology. Here's an overview of the
procedures he used....

By Mark B. Mann

white and 22-karat yellow gold granulated pendant for a customers
turquoise cameo purchased while traveling overseas. The cameo will be
set in a wire loop bezel and the 22-karat yellow gold granulation will
be completed after the pendant is finished. Along with traditional

10. Orchid Gallery - Irene vanEepoel

Don't expect any touchy-feelly, long heavy-on-the-angst-of-humanity
stories with my designs; mostly they result from "hummm, how would this
look with that - or those - and what do they need to hold them
together?" i have literally tons of material to cut and my design ideas
tumble around so fast that halfway through working some of them the
basic idea will change....
