Default Ideas help

I just received a bunch of DH's grandmother's yarn and material stash. She
is in her late 80's and is not able to do it any more due to poor eyesight
and difficulty with her hands. In the fabric was a piece with birds on it.
It is white with squares marked and in the middle is a bird scene/picture
and then the species name. She loves birds, and DH and I were thinking
maybe I could use it to make her a quilt to thank her and show her how much
she's loved and appreciated. It would be either a wall hanging or a lap
size depending on design. There were (I think) eight different birds and the
squares were about 12 in. So far I only have 2 ideas 1-put a shashing
around them to make a wall hanging, or 2- alternate the bird blocks with
bird fabric squares to make a cuddle quilt for her. I'll try to get some
pics. taken of the fabric and put them on my webshots site, until then, any
other creative ideas?

TIA!!

I think you already have great ideas Charlotte! If you decide to go
with the plan of alternating squares with some bird print fabrics, let
me know! My mother is also a "birder" so when I made her quilt, I
collected some bird prints. I'd be happy to share any of the leftovers
with you if you need them!

I would probably alternate the bird blocks with other fabric -- bird
fabric or floraly garden type fabrics. With 12" blocks you could do
something like this.....
bird floral bird
floral bird floral
bird floral bird
floral bird floral
bird floral bird
With no sashing, you would have a 36" x 60" quilt. Add borders
(totaling 6" per side for a total of 12") all around and you would have
a finished quilt that is 48" x 72" -- a very nice respectable lap quilt
-- the size I usually make :-). CiaoMeow ^;;^

Good idea Mary. How hard are inset seams? Anyone have a link to website
with good instructions on insets?

Thanks Tina. You're such a sweetie. I'll let you know if I need any. I
haven't seen any, but then I haven't been looking any either. Were they
hard to find?

Thanks Tia Mary. I hadn't thought of using florals. That would probably go
well with the squares too.

When I made an attic windows quilt, I didn't do the insets. I made the
corner using half square triangles.
