HISTORY OF TRINACRIA
THE SYMBOL OF SICILY

Not only people there, but anyone visiting the region, SICILY, enters
immediately in contact with a symbol that flutter on banners
institutions spreading colors and deeds of a legendary and ancient
people, is the TRINACRIA. E SICILIA TRINACRIA have no doubt we can
also say that they are synonymous, as some say. See engraved on the
drape, a head with three legs, an ancient symbol of solar mythological
derivation, means returning to the thought that ancestral island of
the sun, already inhabited since prehistoric times, which, with its
three peaks cautious on the sea, was the basis Greeks who roamed the
Mediterranean in search of new lands. In fact, circumnavigating,
discovered three corners of the earth, which were the three capes of
Sicily, namely, South Cape Pachino, also known as Capo Passero and
Capo Spartivento, north-east of Cape Messina Peloro, and west near
Marsala Head Lilibeo or Boéo. But as a whole, as well as being a
symbol of the sun and the geographical conditions, the Trinacria is a
symbol of plenty and fertility of the land, as well as its strength.
In this brings the ancient and original triscele in effigy, a
representation of the head of a woman from which branch off the three
legs with knees bent, that the Greeks, it to the new geographical
discovery, called trinacrios that means exactly, triangle. If we look
more closely, and with some careful historical, archaic that face of a
woman, this was none other than the head of MEDUSA, one of three
GORGON that mythology wants daughters to CETO Force and, as the poet
tells us Esioto . In place of the snakes had hair, a symbol of wisdom,
woven by ear, which instead showed fertility, and the three return
legs all'incisione placed on shields of Spartan soldiers, leg bent at
the knee, which symbolized strength. Today, the current version of the
head is that of a woman, perhaps of the Goddess, with a pair of wings
on the sides, suggesting the eternity of time in which his travel
history, surrounded by three ears of wheat symbol of fertility. But
with regard to the presence of snakes, as head of Medusa, allow me to
make a small digression. That of the snake is a function which is
often found in mythology, with meanings related to sin and deception,
as it has passed the Judeo-Christian tradition. But, in particular, in
our ancient Sicilian culture, the snake takes positive values,
becoming, for example, one of the symbols of Palermo. Indeed, in the
capital of Sicily, in addition to the famous eagle, which richly
expresses the pride, the other two are the allegories that
characterize the city: the dog, neither is the fidelity, and the
snake, of course, that is prudence and wisdom , becoming no longer a
symbol of evil, but, indeed, a sign linked to the attributes of the
gods themselves. Those who wanted to make sure of the existence of
these three symbols of Palermo, just go to the Palace of the Eagles
seat of the municipal town, Piazza Pretoria, and immediately right,
into the antechamber of the first floor, find a large plaque that will
describe . But still, in the same building of cities, the snake is in
the symbolism of the Conca d'oro (the ancient name of Palermo), in
fact, going to the magnificent staircase in the first landing on the
left, there is the statue of the genius Palermo, of which copies are
present in the center, which is the protector of the city are charged,
in contrast with the Christian concept of Santa Rosalia. Well, this
character, famous for all Palermo, and is characterized by the
presence of a snake that feeds on his chest. Let us return now to our
Trinacria. This symbol was, in Sicily, a key role, both historical and
political, especially when it came to redefine their relations with
the peoples of the conquered. Indeed, after starting the Sicilian
Vespers, the revolt against Angevins in 1282, was the Kingdom of
Trinacria that istituzionalizzatosi with peace of Caltabellotta, 30
August 1302, made independent of Sicily from the rest of Italy, speaks
of Trinacria also the supreme Dante.
