Default Help!

Hi folks...

Am in a bit of a bind here... we have over 3500 jackets with inferior
double sided zippers and would like to know what is the simplest way of
going about fixing this without having to replace the zippers??!

The problem is that the 'stopper' on the zipper is plastic and it's not very
good, allowing the bottom slider to come out 'relatively' easily if you yank
it. Is there an item to allow one to clip to the end of the zipper to
prevent the bottom slider from coming out easily?

HELP!

By 'double sided' do you mean reversible? If so, that might affect
what you can use to fix the problem.

good, allowing the bottom slider to come out 'relatively' easily if you yank
it.

Are these separating zippers? (One would assume so, since you did say
jacket, but just checking.)

Is there an item to allow one to clip to the end of the zipper to
prevent the bottom slider from coming out easily?

So, the zipper pull comes off the bottom of the zipper with a quick
tug and it's not supposed to.

Look for zipper stops. They do make metal zipper stops that you can
clamp on to the bottom of the zipper. You may need to look a little
harder to find one that will look OK on a reversible zipper. However,
since you say there's already a stop at the bottom of the zipper, you
may be able to get away with using a smaller top stop.

Even the BEST brand of zippers ( YKK IMO) have the bottom stop made of out
of plastic. Typcially, unless you get metal zippers, the only thing on a
zipper that is not plastic or fabric is the slider. Yes, if you reef on it,
or step on it, it will break.

If you were sold a product that has an inferior zipper on it, contact the
manufacturer. It could be that they used a defective or an inferior cheap
product, and ask for replacement. There's no way to replace the bottom stop,
you have to put new zippers on.

I'm curious how hard you are yanking on it to break it... I repair and
replace 100's of zippers a year, and from what I have seen the bottom stop
breaks off when you step on it, slam it in a car doors, or it's very old and
subject to lots of wear

my two cents as always

these don't work on the bottoms of seperating zippers, only ones that are
fastened at the bottom like in luggage or day packs. He says "jackets" so I
am assuming they are seperating.

I was thinking he could clamp them on the side of the zipper under the
slider. I fixed DS's jacket that way last winter, when he managed to
get the bottom of the zipper caught in something and the bottom stop
on the slider side got broken. The slider was fine, it just fell
off....

Hi folks...

Thanks for your replies... yes, these zippers are reversibles. Darn it. I
was hoping there are separate stoppers that one can buy to clamp down at the
bottom of the separating zippers so as to prevent the sliders from coming
off. You'd think that there is such a thing?

Replacing those zippers are going to be costly. I've got a quote for $60
Cdn per jacket, which seems outrageous to me... ($30/hr x 2hrs)...
Currently, we're in contact with the manufacturer of the jackets with
respect to getting them to pay for it, but at the moment, we are in an
urgent need to come up with a solution with the jackets that are already
distributed to people

I wish, if someone invents it I'd be the first to sign up.
I charge $45 an hour as an outerwear specialist, but someone ought to be
able to remove and replace a top stitched zipper ( without inset storm flaps
or snaps throught the tape) in half an hour.

you are clamping it into the side that has the slider on it, that
everything threads into, at the very bottom?.... hmm, that just might
work...hmmm... ( wheels turning...) you know I might just have to give that
a try.
