Stitch Question

I have a stitch question for stitch mavens. I like to make barrettes
using variegated thread, and I use Rhodes stitches on perforated
plastic, 5 holes square. I have some beautiful variegated silk perle
and the Rhodes stitches just don't do it justice. I've done one
barrette in alternating cushion stitch (kind of like diagonal satin
stitch) and that looks great but would like some other ideas.
