Default Stitch? and other XS Pattern-Making

Is Stitch still in existence? I just tried to download it (from http://people.dsv.su.se/~henrikbe/stitch/) but it did not install. In fact, no installation or .exe files seem to be there at all.

Are there any other cross stitch pattern-making programs that you all recommend? I have not done any pattern-making in many years; not sure my old version of PC Stitch would work on my present laptop so I'm researching what else I might get. For the time being I'd prefer freeware or at least very cheap. I just want to try a new project.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I phoned the makers of PC Stitch and told them I had an older version that would not work on my machine and they sent me a new version for (I think) around $10. if memory serves.
