How to decide which color goes where???
Have you already used graph paper and colored pencils? I use EQ5 to do the
same thing, but graph paper just as good, and more portable! G After that, you could try making a sample block with the fabrics you chose to see how that looks. For the twin quilts I made (for my own twins), I used the same design for the quilts, but different color schemes. My girls still love their quilts! -- Wendy http://griffinsflight.com/Quilting/quilt1.htm un-STUFF email address to reply "Mini One" wrote in message . .. Hello everyone, Me again, with more questions.... I have to* make baby quilts for twin girls. I picked out the fabrics I think I'm committed to these colors. I've drawn out a template in pencil.... Now, I'm not really sure how to go about deciding where each of the fabrics go... Help!? Emilia *not really "have to" but you know what I mean! ;o) |

Then take crayons or colored pencils to match your fabric colors and start playing. What is the pattern you are using? marcella |

When I made quilts for my niece's twins, I used the same fabric for both
(mainly pink & blue), but used slightly different patterns. The patterns were so similar, my niece didn't realize they were different until the twins were a few months old Julia in MN -- This message has been scanned for viruses by Norton Anti-Virus http://webpages.charter.net/jaccola/ |

I can't get the quilt in EQ5 because the block sizes are different. Hi "Mini", You can do a quilt with different sized blocks in EQ5. Just use the Custom Set quilt layout. You can put blocks of whatever size you like, wherever you like within a centre rectangle of whatever size you choose. It's a little fiddly at first, but you soon get the hang of it. And it's sure a lot less fiddly than cutting up fabric only to decide you don't like the layout/blocks etc! HTH Leigh Harris Perth, Western Australia |

I've drawn out a template in pencil.... Now, I'm not really sure how to go about deciding where each of the fabrics go... Help!? First, realize that color placement is above all, a personal choice (no quilt police in this newsgroup VBG) There are, however, tried and true 'formulas' for achieving different looks. All things being equal, darker fabrics recede and lighter fabrics draw attention. You can also draw the eye toward an element in your quilt by using an unusual color to hilight a part of a design. It's hard to describe what I mean, so let me give you a link to one of the blocks I'm planning to play with.. the storm at sea http://www.quilterscache.com/S_U/StormAtSeaBlock.html See how the blocks, when place together, look curved? That curved look is in part due to the placement of the lights/mediums/and darks. Go to the very bottom of the page, see the heart element? Isn't it neat what colors will do? For your quilts, I share the opinion of many who responded -- play a little. If you have a pieced block or applique design in mind, use colored pencils and graph paper to see how the designs look when you 'swap' colors around. Be sure to check out what happens when you put the blocks next to each other. If you are using sashing between the blocks, the sashing itself can add a design element. When you have an idea or two, post back and bounce it around. It's fun to see what all the creative minds here do. |

How many fabrics/colors are there? 3 maybe? A light, a medium and a dark?
Just for fun, make some sample blocks using each value in each possible location (e.g. a light-medium star or whatever against a dark background, dark-light with med background, etc.) See which ones you like best. You might even make the twin quilts using the same fabrics in different value organizations. You might enjoy alternating the same block with different backgrounds. I have seven.... Is that wrong? But I have to say now that I'm starting to think about placement seriously, I'm beginning to think I've choosen the wrong colors..... You sound like me. Individually, I like certain fabrics. I start putting them together in a quilt block and hate the combination. When the quilt starts coming together, I start loving them again. This happens mostly when I'm making a quilt for someone else. I recently made my daughter's graduation quilt with pictures of her and her dog throughout. I picked fabrics I thought she'd enjoy and fabrics I was sure she thought her dog would love. I didn't like how they looked with the pictures at all. Put it together anyway. I liked it. She adored it. |
