You could try keeping it dry and just using a spray bottle when you want steam.

Well, the problem is that I'm constantly going back and forth between
using my iron for my shirts and for my quilting. I like the steam for
the shirts and no steam for the fabric. It seems like whenever I have
to iron a shirt, there's no water and I have to add some, and whenever
I'm ironing fabric, I have to dump the water out of the iron. Maybe my
iron just hates me -- we always seem to be out of sync. I'm not too
happy with it either...it thinks it's smarter than me and is always
sitting there all smug-looking. ;^) ;^)

Me too, I have a B&D iron, which works fine. But I guess I haven't even
ever seen a more
expensive iron to see what the difference is. I could truly be missing

out

on something here!
I thought irons just got hot, and then you pressed them down on fabric to
make it flat. ;^)
Hey, maybe ignorance is bliss!

One thing I do miss with my new iron that I had on my old 40-year old iron
that conked out
is the ability to turn of the steam at will. When I use spray starch I

like

to use a hot DRY iron.
But this new iron thinks it's smarter than me, so it won't let me pick

when

to steam or not -- it picks for me.

Um, Ann, you could try not putting water in it?

Seriously, I had no idea what a difference an iron could make. Now, my
Rowenta is heavy, but I never get tired using it. It does the work for me.
I have never scorched ANYTHING since I started using it. The temperature
stays constant. My model, which I don't think they make anymore, has a
removable water reservoir so it makes it easy to empty out. Great steam
when I need it.

What I am searching for is an older iron with no steam holes at all. There
are some circumstances when doing crafts or just iron on interfacing, that
the indentations from the holes shows on the opposite side. I sure didn't
think an iron like that would be so hard to find.

I finally solved that problem. I had this $10 black and decker iron
that worked just great and ended up having steam for quilting and such
because I iron regular clothing too. So...I decided I could really
afford another $10 iron. Now I have one in the basement for quilting
and on upstairs for clothes.

I bet you're worth $10 too!

Cindy, that iron gets Plenty hot!! It's got a temperature dial on it, but
guess what? It heats up too so you be careful if you get one of those, when
you go to turn it off. It too, comes with a dinky stand that turns over
more than it sits upright, so I would glue the stand to a block of wood or
ceramic tile.

I have had one for over a year and I love it. It's just the right size for
miniature blocks and paper piecing.

Me too! I am thinking about that "crafty" iron, not the clover one, but

the
one that's a bit bigger, maybe the size of a deck of cards...oh, and

some
travel irons don't have steam,...but they're like hens' teeth! (rare!)

I just got a catalog yesterday (heheheh remember the Google catalog site?)
that has that iron in it. I wonder if it gets hot enough. Somebody here
has mentioned using it. Can't remember offhand who.
And I HAVE a travel iron. Gets hot enough to iron - NOTHING! I still

pack
it along and still cuss it if I have to iron something.

Well I set it out beside some nice wrinkly jeans, and it just TOTALLY
ignored them!
sighs... so I guess it doesn't :P

However, I did a test with it against my Black 'n Decker Wal-Mart special
travel iron. The mini-iron (when forced into service by a mean Elena) did
iron the wrinkles out, but it took a little effort, and if you have weak
wrists, I wouldn't advise it. B&D won hands down for ironing jeans. Add in
the fact that it takes up less room than the other iron, and you get steam
or a spray if you want it out of the travel iron.

I DO like my mini iron. It's great for those 4" log cabin blocks.
