"mike anderson" wrote in message ... Hi, I am very much new to this and I would like to find a high quality measuring tape for clothes and fabric. Perhaps like what a top notch tailor would use. Perhaps you do not use a tape at all today but something much more refined. As you can see, I am totally lost and in need of some assistance. Any help in this matter will be most appreciated, thank you, Mike My preference is for the 60" long double-sided ones which are made of a flexible rubber-like material. Mine have nice square metal ends. They are printed in 1/16" increments, with quarter and half inch clearly marked, and have metric _and_ inches on the reverse side. In addition, they are almost exactly 5/8 of an inch wide, making for a very handy marking tool for seam allowances. I currently have three, and one is always draped around my neck. -- Beverly ---to reply, delete no spam and .invalid--- |

Advice needed: quality measuring tape or similar, what to look for? (mike=A0anderson) Hi, I am very much new to this and I would like to find a high quality measuring tape for clothes and fabric. Perhaps like what a top notch tailor would use. =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0Perhaps you do not use a tape at all today but something much more refined. As you can see, I am totally lost and in need of some assistance. --- A tailor's tape has a small (approx.3 to 4 inch) cardboard or plastic tab on the beginning end, for discreet measurement of pants inseam/crotch, (while slacks are on the client) and is calibrated to allow for this. The tape should be made of non-stretchable material, ie. sturdy plastic/plastic-coated material. Avoid plain fabric tapes, as they will stretch out of shape. (One reason why I never trust a client's at-home measuring.) Tailoring suppliers carry these items; I seldom see them in sewing catalogs. Will check for sources and post if I find any. If not, you might check at local menswear shops which have an in-shop tailor, ask where they obtain supplies. Cea |

It sounds like a professional tool alright, just what I need. Do you know the brand and where I might pick one up, online? Thank you again, most appreciated, Mike |

My older one is marked "Dritz 841, Reinforced Fiberglass, Made in England". I just picked up two in the notions section of a local fabric store (not TSWLTH), they are marked "Made in China" sigh no other markings. I bought the extras, because from time to time, I manage to run a hot iron over one, and the numbers and lines smear. :-( Nancy's Notions has: http://makeashorterlink.com/?X1E026438 but it's only 3/8" wide (I have a narrow one also, but my preferred on is the 5/8"). Denver Fabric has: http://makeashorterlink.com/?M15155438 bright yellow, so it is probably easier to find :-) I also find a metal rule with sliding gauge indispensable: http://makeashorterlink.com/?L2F013438 But before you incur shipping cost, take a look in the notions area of your local fabric store. Thank you again, most appreciated, You are so welcome! -- Beverly ---to reply, delete no spam and .invalid--- |

i have several, but my favorite is a quilter's tape, which is hugely longer
than the standard tape measure. so, if i were looking for a tape measure via catalog, i would check some of the quilting catalogs--or, check (google) nancy's notions, or clothilde. might have some luck with them. admom wrote in message ...
