I have been lurking for a few weeks and I am already beginning to feel like
I know many of you. I have not come out of lurkdom until now because I have
not yet made any quilts and was not sure if I should wait until I get my
feet wet to post.

A little background: I went over 20 years doing very little sewing and only
got back into it a couple of years ago. Although I love to sew I've never
been very interested in making clothes. The past two years I have mainly
made toys and doll clothes for my two grandchildren with a few Halloween
costumes and household items thrown in for good measure. I have been very
interested in doll making although I've only made one doll and one stuffed
toy so far.

About a month ago I woke up one morning and suddenly realized that I wanted
to learn how to make quilts. I *had* to learn how to make quilts. Since
then it has been almost like I was possessed with this desire to learn this
craft! I have been searching out what information I could online, buying
quilt books, recording and watching Simply Quilts, and of course reading all
your extremely helpful posts here. Then today it really hit me. I was in a
fabric store and saw a section of juvenile fabric drastically marked down.
I had been thinking about making a couple of I Spy quilts for my two
grandchildren for next Christmas and I could not resist. I carried two
armfuls of fabric bolts to the cutting table and when the sales lady said
"It looks like we have a quilter" I felt like I had come home! I did admit
to her that I am only a "quilter wannabe" so far - but I know I will get
there eventually. I already had a small assorted fabric stash from the
sewing I'd been doing but today I came home with 10 yards of new assorted
fabric! I'm hooked and I haven't even sewn the first stitch yet!

I've read the FAQs and learned most of the abbreviations. I have a loving
DH, two DSs, a DDIL, a DGD, a DGS and two wonderful QIs - tabby cats named
Echo and Willow. I have always called my QIs my "sewing cats" because they
love to sit next to the sewing machine while I work. I also learned from
the abbreviations that I have at least a few PIGS. (that abbreviation really
had me stumped for awhile!) It is partially those PIGS that have kept me
from actually getting started quilting yet. I promised my GD a new Easter
dress for the doll I made her plus we are going out of town later next week
to see my youngest son who is still in college. I hope to take some
quilting classes as soon as I can but so far that looks like it won't happen
until May because of schedule conflicts.

Is is OK to take part in this lovely group before actually starting that
first quilt? At any rate I wanted to write and tell you all how much I
enjoy reading your posts and how much I have learned from you all!

Thank you all,
Bonnie

Welcome Bonnie! I'm glad you've finally come out of hiding! Of course you
are allowed to post without having made a quilt yet - how on earth are you
going to know how NOT to do it if you don't ask?? LOL. Where abouts are
y'all from? What are your fave colours, fabrics, chocolate? Don't
disappear now will ya?

Hi Sharon and thanks for your kind welcome! I'm glad I've come out of
hiding too! I appreciate your understanding about my lack of quilting
knowledge! I am so inspired by the pictures of quilts that I have seen
here - you are all so talented!!!

I am from the midwest USA (Missouri to be exact). I'm 51, work full time as
a medical receptionist and spend my free time with my DH and two QIs. My
two sons are grown and the oldest one is married with two children. I love
fabrics and colors that have a warm and natural look to them but I also find
myself drawn to about a thousand other fabric designs that I have seen
online and in shops. Chocolate?! I love ALL chocolate, especially with
nuts and the dark kind. Chocolate can save a day that otherwise seems lost!

I'm not disappearing - you guys are all too cool!

Bonnie

Hullo Bonnie and welcome indeed
I so enjoyed reading your intro. I felt your emotions and, by the end,
had a broad smile on my face.
We have a very special lady who has been a 'member' here for years, and
hasn't yet made a quilt!!
I don't think you will be able to say that you haven't for very much
longer g No-one could survive with all that fabric and your
enthusiasm without making a quilt! So, you come back and keep us
informed on how it's going, right?! If you need to ask any questions,
please do. It's the best way to learn. And, with us coming from all
over the world, there's always someone 'up' - including in the middle of
your night. So you see, you've arrived, and your chair is ready round
the 'frame' (cyber, that is).
Have fun!

Oh, no! Don't wait! I didn't - I asked first! THEN I got

Bonnie, of course you can join in before you start quilting! We LOVE
fresh blood! The good thing about asking questions before you start is
that you have a bigger chance of doing a better job on that first quilt,
because we will give you our best thoughts. This group steered me right
about good quality fabric, good cotton batting, quality thread, and the
right sort of spacing for the quilting... I didn't follow all the
advice to the letter (so I may go back and add more quilting to the one
I made for my son), but they did start me off in the right direction.

Be welcome, join the fun, and have at those PIGS!

Hi, Bonnie! Yes, you can join the group before making a quilt, but you need
to send everyone a FQ for dues first. ;-)
