Strange that they say it is grotesque! I had a lovely golly - much
loved and hugged. Perhaps the golly has different meanings for
different nationalities? I am in UK.

My son had a golliwog which he loved dearly. I think that this has become a
case of being a bit too politically correct. It is OK to have stuffed toys
with orange faces, green faces, blue faces - in fact, every colour but
black.

I was surprised to see Golliwogs when I lived in the UK, but they were a
very popular toy there. If it is less known in the U.S., I'd say keep
it that way and let the Brits make their kids toys.

I know a lot of people would react to them here,
but I understand it is a nostalgic toy for many of you,
and that ,I think, explain our difference in reactions!

Hi:

I am located in the Northeastern part of the States and have never seen or
heard of a Golliwog. Could it be a Southern State toy?

Just curious.

I don't think we USA-ans in general are familiar with them; they're
pretty British. You might possibly, if you're my age, have seen a
little black Sambo or Aunt Jemima doll or something similar. As the
site says, it's "one of the least known in the U.S."
