Default Is wool from Merino sheep always labeled "Merino wool"?

Hello everyone,

I'm curious to know how much of the wool sold around the world is
produced by merino sheep, but not labeled 'merino wool.' does anyone
have an idea, or a lead? Thank you very much for your help!

Most mfgs are proud of their Merino yarn and brag on the fact.

Merino comes in varying grades, however. Even coarse Merino is pretty
fine compared to say, Lincoln or even Wensleydale.

I googled 'Merino sheep' , and learned more than I need to know.
As Slinky Toy said, merino sheep growers "brag on the fact"--it would
seem that merino sheep are worth their weight in gold. Look under
'Merino Sheep Types', click on 'Delaine Merino', wherein it states:
'No other wool can compare with the merino in it's color, uniformity,
strength, density, and fineness.'
Now I know what type sheep to buy for breed stock when I start my
sheep ranch.

Here's a link that discusses the Oz Merino.

http://www.wool.com.au/AWI%5Chome.ns...00&Expand=6.3&

The Australian flock was supposed to be 100% Merino, but I don't think that's
true any more. Other breeds were introduced to help with preventing fly strike,
tick infestation, drought tenderness and other difficulties the Spanish Merinos
experienced with the peculiarly Oz climate... (eg. the French Rambouillet and
British breeds such as the Dorset Horn and Corriedale). Lots of other sheep
breeds have been introduced to the Oz flock, but those would be with a view to
fat lamb production and have little to do with the wool.

AFAIK, though, the 'Pure New Wool' label on Oz-produced clothing *always* means
'pure Australian Merino'.

Anyway, hope this helps?
