Default quilt shops - kauai, hi

My dh and I are going to Kauai for a week at the end of the month. Are
there any quilt shops worthy of giving up anniversary time for?

I went to Kauai with my dh for our 25th....just this past May. I love it
(it's beautiful - I want to live there one day).
Kauai is a VERY SMALL island. But there is a nice quilt shop. My hubby was
willing to give up some time to let me shop. Much of what I found could be
found elsewhere....BUT there were bunches of Hawaiian and Japanese fabrics.
They even had some FQ's and an FQ selection of 'only in Hawaii' fabrics.
Fabric and name of the quilt shop are in the bedroom right now, and hubby is
sleeping, so I will have to post back. I will tell you that the shop is on
the one main road that goes 3/4 way round the island -- not hard to find. I
would stop there on your way to someplace else... if you are staying in the
south, you can stop on your way to visit Hanalei.

It's been about 6 years since DH and I went to Kauai but, IIRC, the shop is
called Kapa'a Stitchery in the Kapa'a Town area. It is on the "mauka" (means
inland or mountain side) of Kaumuali'i Highway (Hwy 50) heading west-ish out of
Lihue towards Hanalei. They were working on the highway last time we were
there and it was a bit tricky to find the shop. It's the only fabric shop on
the island but ( six years ago) you could get some fun fabrics at the
Woolworth's in the one shopping mall. It's not the shopping area that is at
the Coconut Plantation -- I think it's called the Coconut Plantation
Marketplacel and is on the makai side (or ocean side) of the road on the main
highway heading out of Lihue towards to Poipu.
As mentioned, Kauai is very small but an absolutely beautiful jewel! It's
not called the Garden Isle for nothing :-). If you decide to splurge and do a
helicopter ride. be very careful and use a company that has a long history.
We always used Jack Harter but it's been some time since we did that so I don't
know if he is even in business!
A boat or zodiac trip around to the pali side of the island is also a great
trip. There are several luau you could do. Assuming Smith's Tropical Paradise
is still in operation, their luau was nice and not too "haole tourist" -- LOL!
A tour of their grounds is also a great outing as is the bost excursion up the
Waimea River to the Fern Grotto. On one of our trips (we have been to Kauai a
LOT), DH and I got to observe a kama'aina (the name for locals) wedding --
quite a lovely and memorable experience :-).
Poipu Beach is great, especially if you have kids with you. There is a
wonderful shallow lagoon with no wave action and loads of fish. We went early
one morning and got to see several monk seals hauled up on the beach! They are
protected and the lifeguard had put some yellow "Caution" tape around them to
keep people from getting too close. Just outside of Poipu, heading east on the
little road that follows the shore, be sure to stop at the Spouting Horn. Not
only is it a sight worth seeing -- AND hearing -- but there are usually lots of
vendor kiosks selling "treasures".
Remember, if you find more fabric shops, be sure to post here and let us all
know. Hopefully, DH and I will get back to the islands in the next year or so.
It was really easy and relatively inexpensive fro Lizard Land (Phx). From the
east coast, it's a LOT more $$$$! CiaoMeow ^;;^

The highway is complete now. You can see the shop from the highway going
east -- I admit it IS difficult to get too going west. I had one of those..
I know where it is.. but I can't get to it moments. Then again, dh was
driving and he does not have quilters radar G.

Yes, they are.. and it was the most fantastic ride. Do splurge and take the
90 minute trip (a Jack Harter exclusive). I was VERY frightened at the
thought of being in a 'copter. It helped that the pilot was eye candy G.
You will know what I mean if you have the same pilot we did.

A boat or zodiac trip around to the pali side of the island is also a

great
trip.

If you are up for it, try a raft! Kuai Fun Adventures is very small.. but if
Greg is on the island (he is a marine biologist who does underwater
construction in Europe) you will have the time of your life. He is a local
and knows SO MUCH about the island.

Yep. Smith's is still in business. But, we did not get to see a luau this
time round. We are definately going back tho!

A tour of their grounds is also a great outing as is the bost excursion

up the
Waimea River to the Fern Grotto.

I enjoyed it.. tho a friend of ours who went the year before we did found
the Fern Grotto trip boring. It WAS old-fashioned.. touristy.. but very
nice. There was a group of performers on a big paddle boat who did the hula
and sang Hawaiian songs.

We didn't bring the kids (had a real 2nd honeymoon) But another great kid's
beach is Lydgate state park. A man made reef encloses a large 'pool' that is
only 6 feet at its largest depth. There are TONS of fish.. and you can buy
snorkel food. You don't have to be a kid to enjoy it.

Thank you for your input and great tourist information. It will be our
first time to Kauai (both of us have been to Oahu) and we are renting a
condo on Poipu Beach. It is right on the ocean and has a fantastic view.
We will do all the touristy things so stopping at the quilt shop will be
easy.
