I survived the Bead and Button Show
Carla,
So sorry to have missed you! And Maren - had no idea she was in Chicago! I was supposed to have been in Chicago on Saturday, but that got cancelled. I spent a couple of hours at the show that morning, then had to leave for the family obligation that nixed my Chicago trip. The show is overwhelming - I was glad to ahve had an extra couple of hours on Saturday, in addition to Thursday night and Sunday afternoon. I actually spent less money than I planned simply because there were *too* many choices; silly me, I found it hard to make decisions about what I wanted The real high point of the weekend for me, though, was getting to spend Friday afternoon with Maren Purves, who was here in Chicago. We talked, we laughed, we shared "Death by Chocolate" And it's always great to put a face with the name from someone here. We were supposed to hook up with Patti, too, but couldn't get in touch with her before Maren had to leave to get to the airport. It was a good weekend, I'm exhausted Cheers, Carla |

Barb,
I didn't see you there..very difficult to concentrate on the demos with such a large class crowded around her workspace. My project didn't turn out as well as hoped...We only had one oven and one of my classmates removed my pendant before it was done. (She taught a project with a 5-minute bake, and I think some of my classmates were trying to do that one while we were still trying to do the 20 minute bakes on the first project.) I had a thumbprint in the middle of the faux dichro! I managed to cover that up, but now I'm struggling with the polyglaze. Mary Barbara Forbes-Lyons wrote: Mary, I probably saw you in Lisa's class but didn't know it was you. I was waiting for Lisa in the back of the room during one of her demo sessions, then left when it dragged on longer than I wanted to wait. I had on a green t-shirt and a fiery orange necklace and long dark hair. Lisa's great, isn't she? Do you have a pic of your finished pendant? I'd love to see it. So far I've taken: Spiny Knotted Bracelet with Stephanie Sersich Woven beads in Clay with Diane Villano Metal Clay Book Pendant with Louise Duhamel Meeting lots of vendors, too. I had a great convo with Matthew Cole of Indo Expo/ Qui Clasps, spoke to Paula Best regarding the her beads and charms and saw some WONDERFUL quality stones from Bonita, plus another couple of stone vendors that caught my eye. The lampwork selection is as amazing as you'd expect - the best of the best are here. I've fondled clay beads from Grant Diffendaffer and Klew, plus a few others. Some amazing metal clay work from Kelly Russell and ceramic beads of all sorts are very big this year - many vendors! Disappointed, yet again, that there were no polymer clay vendors. Did see the Swarvoski and Rio Grande exhibits. Swarovski's exhibit featured the winners of last year's contest and they were heavily pushing folks to enter this year's contest. Met the editor of Step by Step beads - lovely woman! Sarda was there with their new jewelry line including some exceptional pendants with stones and dichro. Very top-notch. Silver prices last night were all over the place - there were even variations within the true Bali and Hill Tribe markets. I actually bought very little last night - missed a couplel must-see vendors, so I'll be heading back to the show floor before it ends and hope for the best. Pics to follow...!. -- Barbara Barb, I was there on Saturday...took Lisa Pavelka's Collage in Clay. She reminds me of Julia Roberts in Erin Brokovich. I also did not purchase many beads...too spoiled by selection at Intergem. I was thrilled with the Whole Lotta Whimsey booth...They had a wide variety of tools from other media that they applied to silver clay. I bought some really tiny punches and some metal tools. Some of the prices were really good (an entire metal alphabet set for $10). Mary |

Well, the nice thing about the clay is that you can rebake it now that
you are home. Can't offer any tips with the polyglaze - I haven't cracked open my bottle, but do check Lisa's site because she has a whole page dedicated to using it properly. Here's the link: http://www.coveredinclay.com/tips_&_techniques.htm I want to see pics, regardless! I survived the Bead and Button Show
In a right and proper world, I'd have the time and money for something
like Ravensdale I was just looking at the website and wishing... wistful sigh Cheers, Carla Helen wrote: Carla, I was just reading your update on the Bead and Button show...how fun. It sounds like you had a blast. Those shows can be so overwhelming at times. I call it "visual overload". You mentioned Grant's booth. Did you know that Grand Diffendaffer is going to be teaching at Ravensdale in Washington? Ravensdale is an international polymer clay conference. Grant D. has 3 classes that he'll be teaching. One is Totally Textured Beads which is a full day of learning, then the other full day class is his signature Marvelous Mica. On Saturday he's demo'ing his Lathe techniques. What an opportunity to learn from a master. To find out more details about his classes, go to www.ravensdale.info. I'll be at Ravensdale and it would be wonderful to get to meet some of the members of this group there. I'm the registration chair, so if you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask me. I'll help you or direct you to the person who will be able to answer. Me too, Carla. I had really hoped to attend this year, but the IRS had
different plans for our money. :-$ Barbara http://www.penguintrax.com and http://www.backseatgrammarian.com There is a very fine line between a hobby and mental illness. Bead and Button Show
Barb, Here are my pendants...I'm relatively new to clay...did not have time to get my finishing techniques down, and my stripes are wobbly. Could have done a much better job with Kato clay rather than the Fimo Soft provided in class. http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL70/.../158963072.jpg Mary |

I like them, though! The design and layout are great. Try to recreate
them using the clay you are more comfortable with and see what happens. I need to take pics of my projects and post...probably won't happen until this weekend. Take care..! Mary --
I personally LIKE wobbly stripes. I think you did a SPLENDIFEROUS job if you're new to clay! I am TOTALLY impressed. ~KLUNK~!!! Can't wait to see what you're doing this time next year -- oh DEAR! ```````````````````````````` twinkiesmom wrote: Barb, Here are my pendants...I'm relatively new to clay...did not have time to get my finishing techniques down, and my stripes are wobbly. I survived the Bead and Button Show
Well,
it was really Patti who mentioned she'd be in Chicago that Friday (I got there Monday morning for a conference, and only had the Friday afternoon off before continuing on to Edinburgh (Scotland), also for work - anybody near Edinburgh? (don't have a car this time though, too expensive here)), and then we missed Patti ... However, I have to say I'd get together again with Carla any time! Had a wonderful time. Would have liked to meet you too, Barbara! I'm now in Edinburgh until the morning of the 30th, then continuing on to Hamburg (Germany, where I'm from, to meet with family as I'm on this side of the planet already), and then going back home on the 4th. Kinda like Jan G., I'll be on the 'road' about 30 hours. Didn't make if to Bead and Button as my trip's timing was determined by when I had to be in Edinburgh - and the conference in Chicago was on the way, and at the right time. Now trying to catch up with 2 weeks of r.c.b ... (And, Carla: you can bet on it that I was exhausted when I got to Edinburgh too, an hour later than planned, and without the suitcase until several hours later - but it did arrive. I'd rather have another weekend like that one than one like the upcoming one which is likely to be boring unless I go to work. Come to think of it: any bead stores in Edinburgh?) Aloha, Maren (no .sig here this time, because I'm afraid this notebook would bluescreen again if I tried to run up another screen to cut and paste it from g - and all the pictures are out of date anyway.)
