Chenille Yarn
Hi,
I expect someone in the group can help me on this! I'm thinking of knitting a sweater in chenille. Has anyone experience with the Lion Brand of chenille? It is certainly less expensive than some of the other brands, but I'd hate to put in the effort if the sweater won't turn out well (it's planned as a gift). Input, anyone? TIA Shirley |

Shirley,
I made a hat and scarf out of LB Chenille. I used their pattern for a 1 skein hat. I based my scarf on a pattern of theirs, as well. Since I knit these 2 years ago, my only recollection is that it shed terribly as I was working. I don't know how they have held up as these were presents for my DS's former girlfriend. Just for a comparison, my mother knit me a cardigan out of Berroco chenille and it sheds terribly as well. If you go to this website, you can read 2 reviews of the Thick and Quick Chenille: http://www.wiseneedle.com/yarndetail.asp?id=827 Hope some of this helps. TIA Shirley Last year, I made four Christmas stockings out of red and white Lion Brand chenille. The only other chenille I've knit with was Plymouth Kick which I made a sweater out of, and they both shed. The Lion Brand seemed to shed a little less, but that may be because there was less handling (big knitted sweater versus small crocheted stocking). The Lion Brand wasn't quite as soft as the Kick, but it did seem thicker, denser, more threads per inch. Personally, I'd try it for a sweater. Just my two cents. Karen in MN |

I'm thinking of knitting a sweater in chenille. Well, I've got some LB chenille, but haven't knitted anything with it yet, so can't speak as for the shedding. However, for a source of mill end cotton or wool chenille at great prices, on cones, you might want to check this link out: http://www.yarnsunlimited.com/ NAYY, as always. Someone on the Ample Knitters list posted the link the other day, and they have *great* prices. Full cones only. (and you never know how much may be on a cone; could be anything from 1/2 lb. to 2-1/2 lbs.) Cotton chenille prices a 900 ypp, $14/lb.; 300 ypp, $9/lb. Wool chenille, which they call '550 wool chenille' (dunno if that means ypp or what--no yardage mentioned, otherwise), is $16/lb. As they're mill ends, colors are limited, but at that price, who cares?! I can't speak for quality, as I haven't bought any yet. The person who mentioned the link hasn't received her order yet, so she hasn't told the list what the yarn's like. However, their yarns sure look good. g They have other interesting yarns, too. I plan to get something from them, eventually. They don't have an order form on the web page, so I presume you phone or email to order. You can find contact info on the "Directions and map" page, down at the very bottom of the page. Thanks, Monica. I'm just getting back into knitting after a hiatus of many
years - so I'm just sticking a toe into the water! Every time I read in this ng about everyone's stash, I get jealous G. But, thanks for the web site, I may get brave enough (or convinced that I'll stick with knitting) to increase my suppliers and supplies! Shirley "CMM PDX2" wrote in message ... .. I've used it and like it alot. I've used the thin kind for scrunchies and
it turns out beautifully and the larger kind for a scarf. It turned out well as well. A sweater of chenille to me would be like heaven, it's so soft! okay, I gotta ask, I've tried working with the stuff and I got the "worming"
effect. I am a continental-style knitter if that has any direct effect. What can I do to correct this... Thanks bunches |
