I'm not exactly following you, haven't made a purse in ages. However, if
for some reason you can't use pins to hold the slippery stuff steady until you can sew it, get out your glue stick. Plain old Elmer's school glue stick is one I use often for holding still something that is not behaving to suit me. The stuff is harmless - you can even eat some if the urge strikes. Crayola also makes a glue stick but I haven't checked it for edibility. And be nice to your Nascar SIL. We are going through Nascar-withdrawal Syndrome right now and it is very depressing. Get the best fabric you can afford and buy 1/2 yard more than you need.
Washing is up to you. I don't. I do tend to press a lot...after each seam. But press, not iron. Remember to breathe and have fun. -- Mary http://community.webshots.com/user/mardor1948 "sewamommy" wrote in message oups.com... : Hi everyone. i am wanting to make my first quilt in a few weeks and i : found this wonderful website that tells me everything to make the : begginners quilt but i want to know what are the key things to remember : and do? what are some good steps to take in picking material? do you : wash fabric most of the time? do you have to iron every piece? new to : it. trying to learn the right way.....thanks. just let me know if i am : askin too many questions, i tend to do that alot!! : happy holidays!!!! prayers to everyone in the world! : sewamommy: hazel : |

Remember to breathe and have fun. -- Mary People told me as a beginner to choose whether or not I was going to wash or not, and be consistent about it. Like, don't wash some fabrics and not wash others within the same quilt. I completely agree about buying the best fabric you can afford and not scrimp on yardage. Another tip I learned the hard way is...if you see a peice of fabric you absolutely love, BUY IT. Right then. Whether you know what to do with it or not. My LQS lady said her motto is, "If you like it, buy 1 yard. If you love it, buy 3 yards. If you absolutely positively, adore this fabric, buy 6 yards." Of course, she has a vested interest since she sells it. :-) Sherry |

It's up to you whether or not to pre-wash fabric; some people do, others
don't. I pre-wash everything, but if I take it out of the dryer as soon as it's dry, smooth it out and fold it neatly, I find that I don't have to iron most fabrics before cutting. I do press my seams before sewing another seam across them. where to start?
I wash everything because: a. the sizing and preservatives irritate my skin;
b. it's usually dusty from the shelf; c. washing relaxes crooked grain and makes it easier to straighten; and d. I want to know how it behaves after a run through the washer. Then I iron it (damp) wrong side up, gives me a chance to check for slubs and bloopers. You of course may do as you like. Tips: Take a break every half hour or so, or whenever the bobbin runs out, whichever comes first. Leave your sewing machine and ironing board set up if you possibly can -then you can sew for 10 or 15 minutes if that's all the time you have. Press every seam before you cross it with another seam. "Pressing" means up and down; "ironing" means back and forth. Try to press, not iron. Measure your machine to see exactly where the quarter-inch seam falls, adjust if necessary. And sew a scant quarter-inch, just about 2 threads less. this allows space for the fold of fabric in the seam. Buy lots of fabric -it's like having all the colors of crayons. Buy the best you can find, goes for thread too! At first, you'll probably pick the colors you like to wear, and that's OK. It's also OK to buy a kit and follow the instructions, helps you gain experience. Be fearless with color -there are no Quilt Police! Try swapping one fabric from a kit with something you like better. If you don't like the results, finish it anyway, somebody else will appreciate it. Send scraps to me. Roberta in D, Queen of the Scrap Heap "sewamommy" schrieb im Newsbeitrag oups.com... Slip the liner into the bag and make any stay stithes you have
planned. Then fold the top down, pinning as you go, and topstitch or blindstitch as the case may be. This is presuming you want a band of velvet around the top, which is how I read it. You could just add a bit of roughness to the edge of the velvet that will be turned. Just a band of toile stitched, glued, or bonded to the wrong side of the velvet will probably be enough to keep it from slipping on cotton, if it is not organza should do the trick. Miz Polly is right about some folks taking their Nascar seriously. In the course of a conversation after the 2000 presidential elections mention was made of The South Rising Again. I immediately told them they could only do that if they took Florida. I was informed that of course they would take Forida! It is essential for strategic Nascar purposes.
