Hi again

My English is nor nearly as good as my Danish .. so I´ll keep it short:

Can one, on an old sewinngmachine, make anything that will pass as
Quiltstithes?

I do own an Pfaff Toptronic 1071 from 1985, which I love, but...

Thank you

I do all of my machine quilting on an old Singer machine that only does
straight stitches. I can lower the feed dogs (the part of the machine like
teeth that pulls the fabric under the needle), so I can do free-motion
quilting. I move the quilt under the needle, fast or slow, in any direction,
to get my quilting design.

I also use a walking foot, or even-feed foot, to do straight line quilting
on many quilts.

Your English is just fine. Much better than my Danish! Welcome to our group!

Thank you for your kindness

So you dont get upset that it doesn´t look like "handstitch"

Maybe I read too many sewingmachin-brochures and I get my inspiration from
the Proffs in American magazins
- and by the way the homepage pictures is no game to keep up with ;-))
I have seen some beauties..

Yes, yes and yes! All you need is an ordinary straight stitch. The
tricky part will be in covering the feed dogs so they're inoperable and
getting the right foot for free motion quilting. Both of these are
possible on the very oldest machines to very newest. The best help
might come from the sewing machine repair shop, not the quilt store.

No, it doesn't bother me that it does not look like handquilting. I have
seen beautiful machine quilting, and beautiful hand quilting (not done by
me - yet! I'm still learning). They look different, just as oil paintings
and watercolor paintings look different.

I do have a fancy sewing machine that has a stitch called "hand-stitch" but
it doesn't look much like hand-quilting, either! It is supposed to,
according to the manufacturers. I don't use that stitch.

Yes, we all do...except those of us who dont. Mine does fancy stitches but I
dont use them.
Could you please rephrase your question so we have a small chance of knowing
what you need to find out?
Thank you.

Machine quilting does not look like handquilting but it does look nice.
Welcome to the group and please forgive my earlier answer. I try to be
funny. I hope I did not offend you.

Hej Jane! Vi glaeder os at se dig!

If you can get hold of Harriet Hargraves "Heirloom Machine Quilting", it
will answer all your questions. Machine quilting isn't supposed to look
exactly like hand quilting. But all you need is a plain straight stitch.
Many of us use a walking foot (built in on the Pfaff) for long straight
lines, plus a darning (stoppefod)or quilting foot for free-motion curvy
bits. If you use cotton batting, the quilt will shrink a bit after
washing, so the stitching lines sink in and become less visible.
