probably I should have just reduced it more, but I liked the stripes and
feared that reducing more they would have disappeared.

It looks like at one point during the slice & stack process you may have put
the pieces back together perpendicular to each other. FWIW, I like the
results!

but I did not use the "slice & stack" method, I used "reduce logs and
recombine"

Hmm..the only thing I can think of is that in the rolling process, you
twisted/torqued the cane slightly.
