1. From Strict To Amorphous - An Italian Signature
By Dr. Christianne Weber-Stober

People who think exclusively of geometric forms when they hear the name
Alberto Zorzi only know half the story. His jewelry combines avant
garde design with traditional goldsmith techniques. Born in Santa
Giustina in Colle in the Province of Padua in 1958, Alberto Zorzi now
lives in Loreggia, close to Padua. When his interest in goldsmith art
first kindled at the age of 15, it appeared only logical that he should
be educated at the world famous "Istituto d'Arte Pietro Selvatico". In
addition to textile design, painting, architecture, furniture and
industrial design, the institute has initiated its students in the
secret of jewelry design since 1966....

2. Installing New Tapered Bezels Using Tack-Welding Technology
By Mark B. Mann

This ring is in for repair and reconstruction. When it was originally
made, 6-prong settings were used to mount the customers diamonds. All
prong tops are severely worn and one prong has broken. The customer has
requested bezel settings, so the prong settings were removed from the
ring. The ring was re-sized according to the customers request and then
pre-finished. For tacking the tapered 14-karat yellow gold bezels, the
brass tweezers lead was modified to firmly hold a bezel. A ball bur was
used to remove metal from inside each end of the tweezers....

3. Setting & Shank Assembly Using Tack-Welding Technology
By Mark B. Mann

Setting and shank assemblies are routine work in many retail
manufacturing jewelry shops. Here's a method for expediting this
process using ABI tack-welding technology....

4. Laser Mokume - The Satow Method
By Steve Satow

The traditional Mokume process yields very beautiful results but is
extremely labor intensive. Along with the high price of labor is the
large amount of waste. The shape of the finished product is also
limited to the limits of the ancient process, no cast pieces. The Satow
method gives you the ability to transform almost any finished piece
that is cast, hand fabricated or even a wax model to create your own
custom Mokume piece....

5. Inlay 101 - Mastering the basic techniques of shell inlay
By Kendra Roberts

To learn the art of inlay, it's best to start with the basics. This
project will walk you through the fundamentals so that you become
comfortable enough to move on to a more challenging project. Once you
master this simple circular design, you'll be setting stones and shells
in plaques of various shapes and sizes in no time!....

6. You've Got It Made - A Jeweler's Experiences in Designing Tools
By Kate Wolf

As you may have guessed, I highly recommend taking out frustrations at
the bench on your tools. If you are a jeweler struggling with a
process, stop and re-evaluate your tools and procedures. A few swift
strokes of a file or a couple of minutes at the grinding wheel can make
the tool you've been struggling with much more effective. Take the
process of evaluating your jewelry designs a step further by evaluating
your tools and processes, as well. Tool design may not become a
business for you, but it can help your business be more enjoyable and
profitable....

7. Beryllium-Diffused Blue Sapphire?

Beryllium diffusion typically brightens the color of ruby or sapphire,
making a stone more yellow, orange, or red, depending on the original
color. Because the color change can go all the way through the stone,
the treatment is more difficult to identify than traditional diffusion,
which is an easily-detected surface treatment. When beryllium diffusion
was first introduced to the market in 2001, uncertainty about
disclosure created a controversy that led to a sharp drop in prices for
the diffused stones. Today, beryllium-diffused corundum sells for a
fraction of the price of its natural or heated counterparts....
