Well, ain't that site a mine of information!?

Yes, I spent some time at that site actually, after I found the example.
Very informative. The fact that the garters on Joy's site were embroidered
was interesting. I would never have thought women would embellish them, but
heck why not? It is as personal as an embroidered handkerchief or whatever
they carried on them.

O.K. Joy B,
We have had such fun figuring out what your item was....hunt around
for the next thing to try to stump os on. yes, we can play "identify
the item of the month from Joy B's stuff".

That cracks me up that my great grandmother would use them to hold her "purse"
on....but then, she was VERY frugal, and rather eccentric.

I've had two people identify them as garters, and one said

(snipped)
Why grandma had two when you need four, I don't know.
Perhaps there were two decorated and two plain, and only the
decorated ones were kept when uglier, but easier to use,
garters came along? Or, perhaps, she used them as bag
tethers, as your grandma did.

That may still be true. They didn't resemble the
"sanitary belts" on the website, nor what I remember of
those medieval devices. I don't think the mystery has
been solved quite yet.

welcome Angela!
Bobbins are generally 'machine specific' so it would be a good idea to
wait for this purchase until you have the manual, which should show you
the type you need. Also sewing machine needles will be needed... my
favourite brand is Schmetz.
A basic sewing kit would usually include: glass head pins (these don't
melt under the iron), fabric scissors, thimble, seam ripper, thread (not
the 5/$1.00 variety but good cotton such as Mettler or Gutterman),
needles, needle threader, as well as a pair of paper scissors.
Hope this helps

says...
I have recently inherited a sewing machine off my grandmother (who passed
away last year)....it will be in my possession this weekend. I have
absolutely no sewing equipment in my house at the moment and know I will
have a few things to buy. I am told that I will need to buy
bobbins.....don't laugh, but, are all bobbins the same? (size wise or
whatever)....what are some other things that I might need? Apparently it has
a manual so I guess that will help me with threading the needle and all
that.
Any help for a beginner with NO experience would be greatly appreciated
Thanking you all
Angela
